But time kids etc kinda get in the way.

I know exactly what you mean, I've given up doing my bike test to get a track bike and get my ACU licence. I've got 2 kids, got married 3 weeks ago too! If it's not time, it's money!

Re: SV650 or ZXR400???

Of the 2 original choices I'd be thinking SV650.
The main reason as already discussed is availability of spares.

The others aren't wrong though, any Super sport 600 from the late 90's onwards in good mechanical condition makes a great track bike. The main questions should be:
1) How much money do I want to spend on a bike that is realistically almost certain to be crashed?
2) Do I want to race, in which case are there any classes that I'd like to race in?

With point 2 you could find that some of the pre-injection or steel framed classes are cheaper to get into because you won't be next to a 2013 spec bike with full Ohlins on your 2001 GSXR.

I won't be racing, it's purely for a hobby mate, but I totally understand what your saying. Thanks for the input 👍

Once the bug has bitten ;)
if you like twins then ER6 ,s dominate mini twin racing.

Keep an eye on gumtree etc.
There was a zxr 7 in colchester went for 850

I've never rode a twin before! Yea I use Gumtree quite a bit. Zxr 7 for £850! Not bad!

Re: SV650 or ZXR400???

I had a zxr 400 for 2 days the reg/rec died, according to the bloke I bought it from, I gave it back to him, so I bought an sv650 on a y plate for 180 LESS than what i was paying for the zxr.

I prefer the sv, handles better, PULLS like its half the weight of the zx, sounds meaner than the zx, also insurance on sv is cheaper (somehow) than a zx, £70 cheaper in fact at a mere 260 tpft with pillion cover 8 points declared and also 3rd party on any other bike.

All round the sv is winning for me, only thing I might chop it in for wouls be an MT-09

The SV is slightly edging it! Been doing a bit of research at work today, killed the iPhone battery, and the SV seems to be very popular.
