Recommend a lens

Morning,

I'm trying to resurrect my Canon 400D. I first ran it with a Sigma 18-50mm F/2.8-4.5 ( I think) which I really liked but I missed a bit of the zoom range. Then I got a sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 (I think) and whilst the zoom was great, the quality dropped a bit.
Then I was going away for a big trip and didn't have the room to carry an SLR, so the lens was sold and I got a point and shoot camera.

Can anyone suggest a decent "all in one lens"? I think I would be happy if the lens went up to 70 or 100mm zoom. How important are HSM motors and image stabilisation, I've never had a lens without them? Budget is about £200 second hand.
Fixed F2.8 aperture look above my budget, since I had one I think I would be ok with a f2.8-4.5, but I have to be honet, I don't remember many of the numbers...

Cheers

Have a look at this - it's quite a recent guide. http://http://www.techradar.com/how-to/photography-video-capture/cameras/best-superzoom-lens-for-travel-8-lightweight-optics-tested-and-rated-1321030

I have the 18-200 Sigma but rarely use it - I've had to this week as my lenses are in for a service and I really noticed the drop in quality as I'm used to a 24-70 and 70-200 F2.8 L series or a 50mm Canon prime. But I appreciate for those you need a budget that would equally buy you a small family car!

Thanks, don't think I'll go for a superzoom though (size).

this looks rather interesting: sigma-17-70mm-f2.8-4, and is under budget.

Take a look on camerajungle.co.uk if you want a secondhand canon lens. I find the superzooms a comprise, they save you having to carry more than lens but they are bigger and heavier. Have a look at Tamron too.

Found a Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD.

No HSM os stabilisation, but some good things are being written about it. Will dig in deeper. Thanks.

Buy some L glassware (even second hand if tested) and you'll not look back.

I also like ISM.

I'm about to pay £320 to have my L series repaired! General wear and tear. Still worth it though.

Budget! It's £500 for the cheapest 24-70 L, and the condition isn't great.
