Pilot Road 4

Yeah, my new rubber just turned up.
I'll get them fitted at the weekend and give feed back as and when.

They look good.

I'm kinda tempted between these and Pilot Power 3's next.

Let us know how they get on in our current climate!

Very interested with these. Not sure if I just want to get a cheap set of 3s as I know and trust them.

Re: Pilot Road 4

I hope these will be a good choice, I too wondered about the Pilot Powers - to help with my inability to lean as far as I'd like, but as I ride every day rain shine or snow I hope these will be better suited.

When I say they look nice, on reflection the tread pattern is, well not as appealing as the ones on the Road Smarts 2's I just had. Looks like someone went mad with a scalpel. Still I can't see them when fitted.

I am relatively new to bikes, this is my 1st big bike and only my second tyre swap. The Road Smarts were great, way better than the worn out stock thing that came on my bike (RS did 8000 odd miles forgot to make a note when fitted - 14 months).
The guy who did my last MOT recommended Michelin as my tyres were getting a bit low. As I have no idea which brands I like I gave it a go.

Fingers crossed I like them.

I'll whip them off tonight and run them down the road tomorrow.
I did think about having a go myself, as I have a vice and big tyre levers. But no way to balance the things, I did find out how via google.
Might invest and try next time round.

Re: Pilot Road 4

I have maybe 4mm chicken strips in the summer.
I have at most 1.5cm of chicken strip in the winter.

On wet roads the PR3 looks like it will move water off the edges of the Tyre whilst cornering.
The PR4 looks to be slick on the outer edges of the tyre, meaning in the wet - less grip!

Basically, I'm sticking to PR3's - I want to keep my confidence in the wet. - I get at least 15,000miles from a rear on my SV on PR3's, I'm happy with that.

Dead easy, because you only need to do half the work.

I never balance the rear, its only the front that needs doing.

Even the front may not need it so much in the beginning with PR/PP's because they are lighter in weight and (supposedly) more uniform in construction. However, after a while of riding most tyres need balancing/re-balancing.

As for the PR4's, you'll like them. Some say they move around too much but basically if you trust the tyres - they only need a modicum of heat to work - you'll have more grip than you think.

Btw, who get's properly leant over in the rain anyway? I suppose they've made the edges with less tread to stiffen the carcass a little (re complaints about PR3's moving around) and give more dry grip because nobody on road usually get to the edge of the tyre in this sort of weather we're having.

Well the tyres are fitted.
Hope it's not pi$$in down in the morning.

Looking forward to new tyres.

Keep us informed ;) I'm due a new set and might go for PR4s

Re: Pilot Road 4

Well first ride done this morning, in the semi dark, whilst slightly very cold and a little damp/foggy. Perfect.
Just like every other day lately. Still it wasn't actually raining and there were no big fook off puddles so I won't complain.

Initial response is they feel good, however my RS were pretty fooked.
Gave them a quick blap and they responded as I expected.

For my memory - tyres fitted @18439

I do like a round tyre, wish I could afford a new set more often. Like before they need doing!

Re: Pilot Road 4

So far loving them.

They "feel" great and grip well and are more than handling my - at this time of the year - ****ty commute.
Semi dark, twisty, wet, slick, gravel strewn - due to recent massive puddles - fast A roads.

I think I prefer them to my Roadsmart 2's.

But then I am no expert.

arrrrggg. just fitted a set of PR3's at end of season...... wish i had known i would have held off.

Let the others test em out for ya Lance. I'm back using PR2s on the street. Could be next year before I get the chance to try the 4s as I've got a fresh set sitting in the garage. But I'm looking to see the reviews before I "upgrade"

I'm fitting PR3s I think. I shall wait until the fours have some unbiased reviews before I give them a crack.

Great feedback. If they are usable on track in those kind of cold and mixed conditions, they will be more than capable for the road. I think some will be surprised at the dry grip. Really this will come down to "feel" between the different brands. I know someone who ran Bridgestones and hated what he called the "movement" in the PR3's. They were durable enough but he just didn't like the tread movement on corner exit full throttle. I can't say I ever had an issue with Michelins but if this was an issue with the previous PR's then maybe the 4's are an improvement.

carelesschucca 23-02-14 08:45 PM

Re: Pilot Road 4

That tread movement was one of the reasons I went back to PR2's, but I found it was the front that I had issues with, under heavy braking it felt like a car on antilock. Tyre life is a thought for me too, I found the 3's were getting 2,000 miles less to a rear, and with the mileages I do in a year it was meaning having to buy and extra set of tyres, which is annoying when your supposed to be riding a better model of rubber.

I'd say the PR3s are better than the Pirelli Angels though. I've had both and the Angels (a claimed 10k mileage) ran out too fast at 6k. I've managed to get 5.5k out of the stock bridgestone trail wings on my Strom. And there's still some tread left. Might try the angel GTs at some point.

Michelin Pilot Road 3's

Just fitted pr4 trails to the Strom. Looking forward to seeing how they perform.

Re: Pilot Road 4

Well I've done @700 miles now, and these tyres are great.
I love the feel of them, my old Road Smart 2's felt wooden compared to these.
I already trust these way more, really helping build confidence.
As far as the tyre doing anything I wasn't expecting - nothing to report.
It's handled every situation perfectly so far.
I've really enjoyed the nice weather!! Been blasting instead of bimbling.

Lets hope we have a long summer.
Time will tell on wear. Looking good so far.
If you liked the Road Smarts you'll love these.

Have had the pr4 trails fitted, ~300 miles in and they look to be squaring already. Possibly just the profile of the tyre but will be keeping an eye on it.

Feel great so far though, very confidence inspiring and plenty of feedback too.

Will report back on the wear too.

So far though, well done Michelin!

Matt have you played with any of the suspension settings on the Vstrom?

Matt-EUC 19-03-14 01:13 PM

Yes. Only has preload adjustment but have made it much stiffer to suit my fat ar5e.

Not 100% but u fancy a 990smt. Depends on insurance an what money I can muster on top of the strom.

Hope you like buying rear tyres. The front one will last the life of the bike though.

HMC are having an open day on the 29th if you fancy trying out the Strom thou.

Have you considered a second trumpet? Or maybe even a GS?? Although insurance and initial outlay may be rather expensive.

Tomor 19-03-14 10:25 PM

Re: Pilot Road 4

I would rather eat **** than own a gs (no offence to GS owners)

Furry muff. Err... Tiger 955i? Cheap to buy and not too horrendous on the insurance.

An update,

JUST pulled a rusty ****ing wood screw out of my was still pretty new rear tire, she's fooked!!
THANK GOD, I had recently read the puncture kit thread and purchased said item.

You guys have just stopped my day being a complete pile of ****. Thank you.

Couldn't have happened at a worse time, baby girl was due last Friday, so a quick get away is imminent.
Still having to bimble means I'll get there in one piece.

Re: Pilot Road 4

Replaced the rear with one of these this morning, have only ever used the stock one prior to this, my mind was blown at how easy it was to throw the bike with not-square tyres.

Waiting to scrub them in before going completely mental.

Had mine on for about 3k. Can't fault them. Only had one or two moments but they were in the wet and very much my fault. Wet performance is still the best I've experienced. Plenty of grip in the dry too, never been found wanting.

What's the warm-up like, better, worse or same as the PR3's? Just wondering as I'll be due to replace in autumn and that will be my consideration between staying with the PR3's or moving on to the PR4's. Any problems with the slicker edges or only improvements?

Matt-EUC 01-05-14 09:22 PM

Pilot Road 4

They seem to warm up at about the same rate. It's difficult to say about the edges as I have the Trails on so the hard compound is much wider. The edges are a much softer compound though and I've never had any issues despite being right the way over in conditions not necessarily great for such things.

They feel nice and have stayed round thankfully.

I must stress, water dispersal is fantastic.

If you want an alternative tyre choice check out the Michelin Pilot Power 3 & the Michelin Pilot Power 2CT. I have the latter & find them fantastic in wet or dry conditions. The life of them is also good so far-front is on 6k & has plenty of tread left & the rear is on 4K and probably has another 4k left in it. This is on a heavier more powerful bike as well.

The Strom is about the same. It's much heavier with me on it though.
