Thou has knocking from rear end?
 

Hi guys

My SV1000 (K4) has developed a knocking sound while in motion. It's coming from the rear. I've checked the caliper and it's all fine, the rear wheel has no free play. Ain't the chain as it's brand spanking new and the noise isn't consistent, it happens randomly but is always there "...knock....knock knock..........knock.....knockknockknock...." etc. Something to note: It doesn't do it when the rear wheel is off the ground while using an ABBA stand. The wheel spins freely and has no play in it, the swing arm has the usual SV1000 play of about .5mm or so.

Suspect wheel bearings, but anyone got any experience of this or have any other ideas?

The Abba stand takes all the weight off the suspension so the rear wheel hangs with the suspension at the bottom of its travel - you'd need to grab the rear wheel and try and lift (heave) to look for play. Based on my old Street Triple there will be a tiny amount of vertical travel. I spent some time looking for a knock that I could feel through the frame on my Triple - it was the catalytic converter shroud hitting an engine lug - on its prop stand there was half inch clearance (!) so I'd initially discounted it.



Could it be the pads rattling in the caliper? Gentle brake application would isolate that.

Did you change the sprockets at the same time as the chain? Could be related to parts you have recently worked on if it has started since then. May get a clacking if there is a poor mesh between old sprockets and new chain.

Consistent noise but random pattern is usually bearings related. As above, I'd be looking at linkage and wheel bearings.

Ok thanks guys. Chain, sprockets and tyres all done at once. Noise didn't become apparent until recently, the work was done mid summer...think June/July time. Think I'll take it to a garage, can't be bothered pulling it to bits outdoors in this weather. I've bought rear wheel bearings so will have them fitted and get them to check the rest out while the wheel's off. I'll let you know how I get on

Actually, the bike's got about 11'000 miles on the clock and is a 54 plate. Might be worth replacing all the bearings anyway, right? Might throw a Maxton on the rear and get them to revalve the front end for me as well

Turns out it was the right rear wheel bearing as I suspected. New bearings, new front fork seals (noticed front right was lightly misting) and new pads in the gixxer calipers... £205 all in. Not bad and saved me having to do it in this lovely weather. Happy riding!

Might put the bike up for sale next month if anyone is interested, I fancy something different.

That's a difficult question. It's only got 12k on the clock, serviced every 6 months or so (by me). Comes with the complete stock front end (it was a naked originally, not an S conversion). £3k too much?

For what it is and what it can do absolutely not, however it's a sixteen year old SV1000 and folk will price it on that rather than on all the TLC you have given it. It's one of the problems with well looked after and appropriately modified bikes, they tend to belong to people who appreciate them and if you want to get what it is "worth" to you then you need to find someone who appreciates it as much.

I've got a 650 that ironically looks almost identical to your 1000 (but obviously in better condition... :) ) that I have owned for over twelve years and we have shared many adventures together.... and I can't see myself selling it ever, if for no other reason that nobody would give me what it is worth to me. I've also got a TDR250 that is in the same position..... Neither see a lot of action these days but every now and then I drag them out and dust them off just to remind myself of the good times....!

You either need to fall out of love with it and let it go, or find someone who shares your passion. On here is a good place to start though so good luck and I hope it finds a great home.
