Pirelli Angel GT fitted

Bike: 2006 Triumph Daytona 675,
Current mileage: 10.9k
Price: £215 fitted
Distance since fitted: a mighty 60 miles

I was always going to fit sport-touring rubber (better to have decent grip in wet/dry rather than all grip in dry and none in the wet), all reviews seem to say the same thing:
http://www.visordown.com/product-fea...iew/22626.html

I have run the previous Angel ST on my Aprilia in the past and liked them. They were hmm.. "not perfect" in the wet and durability suffered with a heavy bike (duh!), but I couldn't complain about them in the dry, never had an issue.
They were a single compound tyre and Pirelli claimed that they avoided problems associated with dual compound tyres.

The new GT's are a dual compound tyre (Italians...). Pirelli and the reviews claim that durability and wet weather performance were improved.

Initial thoughts:
- the profile of the tyre doesn't seem to be as steep as on the ST, but turn in is ok.
- on the first part of the run, you could feel that you're scrubbing a new set of tyres in. In my experience (50k ish miles) I've never felt this to be so noticeable.
- on the second part of the trip, the tyres inspired more confidence and I could increase the cornering speed.

So, the initial thoughst are good but be sure to give them time to scrub in.
Looking forward to the future miles, I'll update this in a few weeks.

Will be interested to read your update on the GT's.

Am currently running ST's and can't really fault them so far.

In the past I had run Diablo Rosso, but couldn't get one when I blew out my rear and my fitter provided an ST.

It has never been confidence inspiring. I am looking forward to wearing the thing out.

Re: Pirelli Angel GT fitted

Wee update,

Done approx 400 miles in Glencoe this weekend. Tyres performed pretty good.

Weekend consisted of a wet ride to Inverness, a few runs along Loch Ness to F. Augustus, a damp run up the Applecross road and a wet run down followed by some changeable conditions (wet->dry) on the way back to F. Augustus through Muird of Ord.

I'll second what the reviewers said, they seem to be ready to go from the moment you start riding, but I chose to give them a few minutes to warm everything up anyway.

They are not as quick to turn in as the ST's were, but still good.
The twitchyness I felt in the wet with the ST's wasn't there, in the dry there was never any issue.
At no point did I feel uncomfortable with then or thought I'm running out of grip.

They might not be to everyone taste, but I am very happy with my purchase.

Bike: 2010 SV650 Sport,
Current mileage: 19k
Price: £120 fitted (rear)
Distance since fitted: a mighty 250 miles

Had a Angel GT on the rear for about 250 miles now, absolutely love it. Took no time at all to run in and feels very secure, much better than the strada I had before and much more confidence inspiring than the PR3 before that. I really do like this tyre. So happy went for it.

Have only ridden in the dry at the moment (In Scotland - who'd of thought that!!!) but feels way more stable and has upped my pace around a few of my favourite bends. Was fair belting along today (for me)

I am putting 1200 miles on it next week so we will see how it copes with big miles and whether it squares off quickly, like the Strada. Just hoping it gives decent miles - as claimed by Pirelli. Got 3.3k out of the Strada so if it can better that, i will be happy.

Was well happy with the Strada in the wet and that is their budget rubber, not heard any negative comments about GT in the wet - Have you ?

Only that they spin in the wet

Re: Pirelli Angel GT fitted

6000 miles later...
I took the bike around europe, temperatures ranged from -5C to +40, other than the expected, the tyres performed really well.

The only "moments" I had were either down to the rider or road conditions.

I had the front end slide on a hairpin, but I blame it on a silly lean angle, low speed and ambient temperatures close to 0.
The rear spun up a few times in torrential rain, but the road surface was covered with crap as well. On clean (wet) roads they were ok. Overall they did improve wet weather behaviour compared to the ST.

The rear did square a bit (had to get back on motorways), I've got around 1/3 - 1/2 tread depth left.

Still happy with the purchase.

Re: Pirelli Angel GT fitted

Got an Angel GT on the front to match the rear. Did 50 miles to scrub in and was as far over as i have ever been on any tyre ever. Probably too far for scrubbing in but didn't feel I was pushing that hard.

Been out today, over Kielder, Alston & Hartside - absolutely love these tyres. Front end feel is a step up from other tyres I have tried, as good a step as replacing the original Walnut Dunlops to Avons.

Rear still going strong after 3500 miles (usually scrapped a tyre by this mileage) but has started to square a little, but that was mainly due to my tour of Scotland in the summer.

Angel GT's are MCN product of the year, and I heartily agree.:smt038

sounds good but i'll wait to see what the verdict is in the rain.

went threw a road river today at full lean on the PR2's and not one bit of drama. just wish there was more feedback from them.

Nae problems in the wet whatso ever!!! Did Stromeferry to Durness 250ish miles in the pishing rain, and loved it. Was chucking the bike around going over the Kylesku bridge area.

Maybe on a bigger more powerful bike, people are getting them to spin up but never happened to me, not even expierenced it crossing white lines etc.

Had to brake very hard yesterday in the damp due to my a pheasent strike :smt107 on my pal in front of me but bike was very stable under braking. I even managed to make the front give a wee 'chirp' when braking hard into a 30 zone coming into Alston, sneeks up on you a wee bit :o.

Re: Pirelli Angel GT fitted

Replaced BT016's on the gixxer with a pair of Angel GT's.

Did 2000 miles on the bridgestones and never felt happy on the front, going round roundabouts always felt like i hit a step and then the bike would fall over, went really light. Not a nice feeling. Thought i just had to get used to a different bike with a more 'active' front end.

Nope, just had to replace with a pair of Angel GT's.

Bike feels so much more stable and predictable, i just took it for a wee scrubbing in run and am nearly all the way to the edge on the front. These tyres give me such a feeling of confidence. I thought the same when i had them on the SV and now have transformed the Gixxer.

Wish i had fitted them when i got the bike.:smt041

Re: Pirelli Angel GT fitted

Got to say I'm liking the Angel GTs too. Surprised more people aren't commenting on them but I guess they are still relatively new. I probably have about 2000 miles on them now. I had the STs on before which I quite liked and gave me mega mileage (10k on the rear, yes, really, albeit squarer than a Rubik's cube by then!) and reasonable confidence wise but the Gts deffo feel better.

I was surprised that the gts didn't have as noticeable a new tyre feel as you usually get and have a very gentle drop in, I think probably because the profile is relatively flat. But so far grip feels good in all conditions and cornering feels good. My nerves twitch long before the tyres do (sigh).

I think the biggest thing I've noticed is the fact that they feel grippy and good to go as soon as you get on the bike. Almost all previous tyres have felt like they need a bit of warmth and a few miles before they really grip properly. With these, the first roundabout of the day is no longer squeeky bum time, even in cold weather.

Be interested to see how they shape up once the mileage gets up but happy so far and reasonably priced for £220 a pair, ride in ride out.

Anyone else tried these? (particularly anyone who's had avon storms!). I love avon storms but they're £195 fitted, the garage have these in for ~£170...tempted to take a punt

Re: Pirelli Angel GT fitted

I have them on my SM-T and they're alright, not as confidence inspiring as the PR3's IMHO and not anywhere as good in the wet either...their good enough to get a second rear before replacing front and rear with something else (need to make the most of the front) but I wont be putting them on after that...likely PR4's by that time, harder center and softer outside than the PR3's but still good wet performance...ticks all the boxes for me

Sorry no Avons on prior, only Conti's which came with the bike

I can't find anywhere local to Southampton who does Angel GTs cheaper than £275!

Re: Pirelli Angel GT fitted

Mileage: 20300.

The rear is getting replaced. There is 0.5-1mm till the middle wear marker left, but I've got a bigger rideout approaching and this won't be enough. It lasted almost 10k miles, can't complain about that.

I'll stick to most things I wrote earlier, but once this one is done, I'll probably chuck a pair of PR 3/4s on.

I take this back. Not if you're camping in Scotland .

I'm in the same boat, one more rear Gt then back to a set of PR3/4's...the Gt's are good but the PRs are just better alrounders IMHO although with a little less mileage...the in the wet performance is what pushes me back more than anything else though

Re: Pirelli Angel GT fitted

I'm sticking with Metzeller again, all though a Z8 Roadtec instead of the M5 sportec. That's lasted 6,000 miles over the winter and a fair few dual carriageway straight line stuff.

Re: Pirelli Angel GT fitted

Bike's at 22k something now.

I've started commuting again and with the temps hovering aroung 4C these are slightly annoying.

The problem is I can't get them warmed up because of filtering around 15-20 mph. They seem fine after I pass the worst of the traffic and pick the speed up.

Also, the front is pretty squared now (still on the first one), I probably should have changed the rear sooner and keep the front in line.

dyzio 11-05-16 08:26 AM

Re: Pirelli Angel GT fitted

Probably the final update on these,
Fitted a new front after 12000 miles. it was close to the wear markers, maybe a bit better than the rear tyre, not enough to warrant an MOT advisory but felt like a 50p coin.

With hindsight, I should have changed them as a pair when I've done the rear.

On another note, they's reminded me how weird they were when scrubbing in. The rear wasn't noticeable but with the front you know you've got fresh rubber on.

Re: Pirelli Angel GT fitted

Got a quote for the new bike (160 rear) from the same garage: £260 fitted (£116+£144).

An increase of £45, I'm a bit shocked to be honest. Is this a normal price?

Unless you're in public services....what about us in the private sector aye....we'll just carry on with no wage increase for another 5 years...

I'm still using Pirella ST's on my explorer, I find they're a good compromise of performance and longevity
