2005 sv650s won't start

Well folks how's it going. I ride my sv650 year round here in Ireland. Went out to go to work yesterday and it's not starting. Dash is lighting up, lights come on, hit the ignition switch and I hear 1 click.

I tested using my multimeter earlier and for these readings;

Bike powered on battery - 12.14v
Attempt to start - 12.30v

Relay reading bike powered on - 11.93v
Relay press ignition drops to - 0.00

Any suggestions or advice very much appreciated as relying on lifts to work currently.

Re: 2005 sv650s won't start

How old is the battery and what is voltage showing with bike off?

12.1v would be roughly 50% Health, the battery that came with my SV died at start of 3rd season riding it despite showing 12.4v with the bike off.

It could be holding charge but have a couple of dead cells so doesn't have the cranking power required.

Have you got another 12v battery you could use to try with jump leads?

Even a car not running will do.

Hey thanks for writing back.i got the loan if a car booster yoke....can switch it between 12 and 24v and have tried to start the bike with that yoke and no joy...only tried with the 12v setting though....maybe switching to 24v (like a car battery) may give it a better jump? In regards to how old battery is I couldn't tell you. I bought the bike 2nd hand about 18 months ago

No, car batteries are normally 12v also. If no joy jumping with 12v booster, and no difference still just getting the click then I would look at the starter next.

Assuming you've checked the fuse on the starter solenoid is good.

Do not try 24v!!! it will probably fry your ECU and could damage other things too. Incidentally, car batteries are generally 12v too. 24v, I would think, are mainly commercial vehicles.

Hey man. Ok on the boosting at 12v only and I've learned now too . The fuse is in good nick, I swapped it with a spare today just to make sure and made no difference. Think I should just swap out the relay for a new one? Should the voltage drop to 0 on the relay when I press the ignition button to start the bike?

Shouldn't drop to zero but not sure where exactly your taking the reading from.

I know it's not an SV but helped me go through things methodically when diagnosing issues with starting so may be worth a watch

I had a car that just clicked - It was the starter motor

See them 2 screws at 1.57 on the relay. I'm touching the negative and positive of my multimeter to them and getting readings when bikes in ON position and then when I press the ignition switch
