Does this chain need replacing?

Hi

K5

I'd appreciate a view on whether this chain is just dirty or needs to be replaced.

Chain was fine (and not seen too many miles). Left it a week (it may have gone away under the cover wet). Now it looks terrible and and won't clean off with chain cleaner. The middle looks ok, the sprockets look ok, but the outside looks "rusty". But it was only a week.

Thank you

Surface rust isn't an issue, it may look unsightly but it won't be a problem for the chains operation. What is more important is that the O rings remain well lubed so that they can do their job of keeping the water and crap out of the bits that actually do the work. Lift the back wheel off the ground (get someone to pull it up on the side stand for you) and spin the back wheel. If the chain runs freely without any tight spots it's probably fine.

Get some chain wax and spray it with that, it will protect it in future and cover the rust for now.

Chains
Rule one ----- Keep it lubed. Little and often.
Rule two ----- See Rule one.

What no one seems to have mentioned is lift the chain off the rear sprocket. If it clears the sprocket excessively then it's toast as it has stretched along it's length. There should be a section int he manual where it advises to count the number of links in a running length with a 20lb weight attached or something similar. Then you know its shot.

Basically if it lifts off the rear sprocket but any excessive amount then it's FUBAR.

If the bike is wet, best to leave the cover off till it dries.
The instructions that come with JDC covers recommend not covering a wet bike.

A Tutoro Auto (or similar) is a worthwhile purchase imo, saves a lot of hassle.

Or may only need adjusting?
