writing to your MP

does anyone do it? I do but I must admit the occasional reply I get does not make me feel much better (since my politics tend to be centre/left). Cleethorpes is bundled in with a large farming area and it's nearly always a Conservative seat, currently "served" by Martin Vickers. (Grimsby, next door, has been Labour nearly forever).

A couple of weeks ago I wrote to Mr Vickers with a link about the UN UK poverty report who responded that he thought it was laughable. (empathy not a strong point, perhaps).

I wrote to him today because of the report showing how Conservative cuts have been most severe in the North, whereas spending in the South East and South West has increased.

I wrote:

"Dear Mr Vickers,
Another report for you to find laughable.

Chuckle away while you "earn" your £77379 and the average salary in your constituency is £29887 and the number of people trapped in the zero hour contracts scourge (nationwide) increased by 100,000 last year (to 1.8 million).

I used to be a field service engineer, if I didn't fix things I was fired. Since your job is to improve conditions for your constituents, why are you still employed? Do you feel any guilt at taking our (constituents taxpayer) money?"

Too harsh or not harsh enough?

The trick is to make them think you do or might vote for them. Then they take you a bit more seriously and write a reply according to the party gospel.
My local MP is Teresa Villiers, High Tory pillar of the establishment complete with aristocratic pedigree and very nearly lost her "safe" seat at the last election due to her position on brexit. She replies to letters now.

I often write to our MP, not often to complain because she is a staunch brexiteer, ( so we already agree on the most important thing to happen since WW2 ) but I sometimes pass things on to her that I think are important. I have also written to home Secretary a few years ago to ask why some illegal immigrant without a licence who ran over an 8 year old girl and dragged her 100 yards under the car ( dead obviously ) was not jailed or deported ( he claimed human rights and because he was married with a kid over here and ' his right to a family life' overrode his getting deported / jailed ) made my blood boil but I got a proper condescending letter back ( as you often do from governments ) - they really do live in a bubble down in London.

Wrote to mine a few years ago regarding house insurance being unaffordable due to some houses in our postcode being flooded while ours never has in over 200 years.
Polite letter back & within 6 months was able to get a 'sensible' premium.
Cause & effect or just sheer luck ?

My MP is a tory.

Its illegal to put noxious substances or bombs in the post so no, I don't send him anything.

Nowhere near harsh enough.
As far as I'm concerned the tories are cheating, lying, thieving, murdering scumbags.

Wrote to Mo Mowlem when she was MP for Redcar. She was also Sec of State for NI. She was an absolute diamond. Was asked to go in and meet her to discuss the issues. She sorted HMRC out with a baseball bat. Well impressed!

Wrote to the liberal MP for Redcar a several years back. Great response, and he also did a follow up. Way better than average.

Wrote to Jeremy Hunt, the then Health Secretary, when the NHS Pensions company continued to screw up my pension. Waste of a stamp.

We have one of those, I no longer bother writing about anything.

My local and regional AM are also useless riders of the gravy train....
