Lube spray - silicone v non-silicone
The WD40 can proudly states that it's silicone-free.
I've got some 3-in-1 type "professional" spray which has silicone in it. I've never understood the difference, or where to properly use either. Any ideas? Thanks. |
Re: Lube spray - silicone v non-silicone
Use the WD40 for dispersing water, like off plug caps and stuff. Use the 3 in 1 as penetrating oil etc.

Re: Lube spray - silicone v non-silicone
experience dictates that WD40 penetrates far better than standard 3-in-1 as it's just too viscous.
No idea about the usefulness of silicone though. It's apparently fairly inert and hydrophobic. |
Re: Lube spray - silicone v non-silicone
I find that penetrating oils work better as penetrating oils. Duck oil seems one of the best.

As a very rough guide, silicone oils work well with plastics and rubbers, especially good for curtain tracks! I often use it where probably a mineral oil would be better on general bits and bobs if the tin happens to fall to hand, not really found a downside yet.

Good morning all.
3 in 1 Silicone lubricant is the dogs for certain tasks! I'm on 2 tins a week now, & haven't needed to see a counsellor yet:D. As Embee says, it's better on plastic & rubber components, such as; Tank rubbers, & sidepanel grommets. I find it particularly useful on cables, & for rubbing down pitted fork stanchions with 1200 wet & dry. It doesn't work very well as a penetrant, this is where as Yorkie says a good penetrating oil is better. Cheers. |
