SV650 Curvy - Voltage Regulator / Rectifier supplier?

Hi,

I think I need to replace my SV650 Curvy's regulator / rectifier as it shows 13.50 volts at idle, and the voltage drops to 12.52 as the rpm increases to say 4,000 and then stays there. Returning to idle brings the voltage back to 13.50

I am struggling to find a supplier for the factory spec part. Does anyone know of a good supplier or alternative brand that is not very expensive?

Thanks,

A lot of the Facebook groups recommend ricks racing US based, a little more expensive and a bit of a wait for delivery may be worth a look. Also on sv650 UK Facebook group is a guy named Anto Kidd who works for Suzuki Ireland and he's also had a good feedback.

Hi aj76,

Near on £100 for the regulator / rectifier?!

Are they all that price range?

Thanks,

On fowlers OEM is £237 so 100 quid isn't bad

Hi,

I had no idea that this small box could be so expensive. A car's alternator doesn't cost that much.

Are there any alternative cheaper options, including fitting another type from another model of motorbike?

Thanks,

There are others that can fit, I'm sure someone will be along that can give some insight. You say about the voltages at the battery but have you tested the reg/rec itself?

If not could also be stator so you may want to do more testing before spending any cash ;)

I bought an Electrex one for mine:

https://www.electrexworld.co.uk/acatalog/RR85.html

However, it's £90 and out of stock at the moment. Also, near in mind that apparently there are two different versions with different plugs, so check which you have first.

For what it's worth, mine did exactly the same thing - the voltage reduced when revved. All the reg/rec tests passed OK, but it wasn't working right. The new reg/rec fixed it like a dream.

The favourite fix is to fit a MOSFET type from another bike. The MOSFET semi-conductors inside the reg/rec have a significantly lower volt drop across them and so don't heat up as much, and they are much more reliable and stable than the original R/R.
They usually have a code number like FH012, FH014, FH020 etc., generally the higher the number the greater the capacity I believe, a 14 or 20 would do fine.

I fitted one to my curvy, IIRC it came from a Honda ATV (ebay). You will need to alter the wiring, but it is very simple to do, the yellow alternator wires are all the same, and there are just the pos and neg outputs. The FH MOSFET R/Rs usually have two sockets on them, one with 3x1/4" spades for the alternator, one with 2 spades for the output. The pos/neg are always the same way round as far as I know, a search will come up with which is which, the pos is the inboard spade, the neg is the outboard one. Search Shindengen mosfet reg/rec on google images and you'll find it.
Later versions have slightly different sockets to the earlier versions.

This ebay item 193208402423 is an example, or 163663042100 , or search for cheaper alternatives. Just found this one, cheaper 143492606641

Hi all,

That's really helpful information. I have also tested the Stator and the readings are equal for all three outputs, including when idling and fast idle, which continues to suggest the Rectifier is the culprit.

I will take a look at the suggested fixes and let you know how I get on.

Thanks!

I fitted a FH008 from a CBR600RR (2007 IIRC) to my SV650S 2001 nearly 10 years ago now. The FH008 has been fitted to other Honda models too. It fitted in the original place with the fins running in the same direction. I fitted the connectors from my original regulator, as they were in good condition, to the Honda unit. This seems a fair priced one

Just check with the seller it is marked FH008. If you do a search on this forum for FH008 you will see a few have been fitted.
