rear axle lube

I have just taken my rear wheel out to replace chain and sprocket and wonder if there is a preferred lubricant for the back axle when I replace it. Currently it is covered in some pretty mucky and sticky looking grease. Many thanks

Clean all the old crud off with brake cleaner or similar, and just give it a very light smearing of regular grease, you don't need to butter it thickly.

Before you put the back wheel on, check the sprocket carrier bearing has plenty of grease in it, and put some more on if it's looking a bit dry. As it isn't a sealed bearing, extra grease is welcome to keep it running smooth.

And don't forget the spacer. Ask me why I know not to forget the spacer :)

just wipe it with a rag and put any grease on it that you have to hand. do not put copper grease on it. the grease is to stop the axle sticking to the bearing races.

or if the grease that is on it looks ok just slide it back in till the next time.
