Nailed??

When I got home from the AR my rear tyre looked a bit melted, but I was tired and didn't take much notice. When I went to ride to work I discovered it was pretty much flat.

I took the wheel off this evening and discovered five small nails in the tyre, at least three of which had penetrated the casing. They're shown here on a 2p coin for scale.

One or two I might regard as misfortune, but five looks like someone has been putting nails in the road.

Obviously I've got no idea where I got them, but I'd suggest checking your tyres in case it was along the AR route.

Keith.

I'll check in a bit. That is very suspicious! Did you ride anywhere out of the ordinary in the car park or on the field?

Did you get in the way of any of the markers? Fallout did say he was going to drop nails in front of anyone who didn't immediately pull over. I'd go have a word with him if I were you.

Only small talk but the tyre guy I spoke to once said that one of the biggest cause of punctures was builders/ plumbers etc spilling screws n stuff when they're parked up and unloading outside houses??

That's really uninteresting isn't it? Sorry about that.

They look like little oval headed panel pins. If so then all five could have come from a spill like Laurie says.

It's the kinda thing people would be too lazy to scrabble about for.

Remember that fence post was down? I wonder if it came from fence repairs.

Not in the field of the pub, wrong type of nails.

Would be from close board fencing if anything.

Not seen anything in my tyre but will have a better look when I oil the chain.

They don't look like ovals, they look like wire nails to me as they have four pyramid points and are bright steel, (ie not galv), and the one to the far right looks to be an annular ring nail, looking at their diameter I would guess that they were about 1"-1 1/2" long originally, also they were in there for a reasonable while - the heads have worn away.

You upset anyone recently?

I don't think I've annoyed anyone recently, well no more so than usual.

My first thought when I took them out was cheap 1/2" panel pins. The bottom right one still looks like it has the original head on it. I'll take a proper look tomorrow.

Re: Nailed??

I've just got the loupe out and taken a proper look.

They're definitely round, just under 1.6mm/16gauge and the longest of them are all around 12mm. Most of them have small, badly stamped ridges which I'd usually expect near the top of a panel pin.

So my money's on 1/2" panel pins and as Ian pointed out, if someone spilled them they're just not worth picking up.

I ended up having to stop on the way back from the AR with a good ol' puncture so you're not the only one who ended up with a flat.

No nails in mine but a nail sized hole.

I had a rear tyre explode on my FZ6 after navigating a roundabout - the split was a good three inches across the tyre. It transpired that I'd run the front over a stanley blade which flipped it up ready for the rear to swallow it. It was a scary moment!
