Riding to Bergerac

Well, as I've now got a Tourer I thought I should do some touring!

I want to ride down through France to the Dordogne to a house some friends and family are staying in for the summer.

I don't think I can do the 680 odd miles in one hit, so I'm looking for suggestions of somewhere to stay mid way.

Anyone know of anything?

As a cheap starter for 10....

Formule1 at Orleans, I stopped there on the way down to the Pyranees last year. In a reasonable location for these things and works out about £30 a night.

That looks interesting. Cheap and cheerful but does the job

Just came back from my euro trip, did Geneva (Switzerland) to Manchester UK in one sitting, via Paris to take pictures and do a few laps of theArc de Triomphe :)

This was done on an S pointy with clipons - I did catch an hour snooze on the ferry though ;)

Quiff and I did this two years ago ( my in-laws live about 20m north of Bergerac). We did the overnight ferry from Pompey to St Malo, stopped at Mont St Michel for brekkie, then headed south. Got off the ferry at 7am, arrived at the in-laws just after midnight!

A long ride, but worth it once we got down there.

LP's recommendation looks a good option.

Not a chance ;). I'm too old and cranky for that!

Going Dover to Calais as it's so easy for me and very cheap.

We did Dover-Calais as the increased costs of Portsmouth crossings did not justify the time savings to us. We were in the car, so the extra time sitting down was not so much of an issue either. Formule1 are fun places I think and yes, cheap and cheerful for sure.

One thing Messie if you decide to go via Orleans, try to avoid Paris at peak times or avoid it altogether. The Peripherique has some suicidal bikers, more so than than that London IMO. If you do end up there, keep your eyes peeled :thumleft:

Well I've changed my mind a bit. What with 2 nights staying somewhere, plus a new sat nav with Europe on it for getting around the Perifique, I've decided it's cheaper for me to go Portsmouth to Le Havre. I can do the journey down to Bergerac in one hit then and get to spend more time lollong about in 34 degrees with chilled local wine in my hand.
Vive le France!

(just got to juggle getting 500 miles on the new bike at the right time before going, so I can get the first service in)
