Can different types/brands of anti-freeze be mixed?

I have lost some coolant due to a faulty rad cap and would prefer to top it up with a proper mixture rather than water alone.

Can they be mixed safely?

Different brands can be mixed but they should be of the same type. For most anti-freeze this is "Ethelene Glycol" The mix ratio with water, and colour are all brand dependant and will only effect the overall colour of your mix and the preparation of each mix you top up with.

Edit: Frankly, if you've only lost a bit, topping up with distilled / de-ionised water will probably leave the mixture in a suitable range of anti-freeze to water, and after a couple of heat cycles it should all be mixed up pretty well.

Cheers Jambo. Maybe I'll use distilled water and see how much it takes. I can't see it's that low but there's nothing in the expansion bottle at all.

Apparently you pay a stupid amount for a lovely, modern sports bike and they can't use a radiator cap which lasts for any amount of time. (Trumpet)

Don't put mine in that category! The only other fault was a warranty headlight replacement.

Apparently the rad cap should be changed at the first service which I'm pretty sure mine wasn't. Was only £5 odd.

Time to go and try out one of Uncle's tricks...

No thanks Tony. It seems ok. Took about 1/3 litre of distilled water so should be fine.

I saw you today. I was coming the other way but didn't realise it was you until you turned round. You were gazing at your behind for some reason!

okay as long as you don't mix different strengths, then you'll be confused.
