Steel plates for SV Curvy
Hi everyone. I'm in the midst of changing the clutch as the bike no longer selects gears properly (lower gears). Anyway, I've removed the friction plates but noticed that the steel plates (not all of them) have burn marks in places. Is this normal to see on the steel plates or should I be replacing them as well this time. I understand that the previous owner may have run low on oil so perhaps this is caused by the clutch over heating.
Thanks for reading this. I've edited this post to upload an image of one of the plates. You'll notice the three burn marks on the plate. Thanks for any help that's out there. http://www.recom.co.uk/pictures/steel_plate.jpg |
Re: Steel plates for SV Curvy
I'd say replace them but then I have not done many clutches.
To me they look like they have been used when drag racing? Looks like there is a glaze? Don't take my word for this though. When I took my steel plates out they looked like they where brand new but the friction plates where worn down. |
Re: Steel plates for SV Curvy
Thanks for the reply vardypeeps. Oddly enough the friction plates look new and the steel plates look duff..... But this is my first wet clutch replacement and don't wont to waste money or on the other hand not replace them and ruin a new set of friction plates.....:smt102

Re: Steel plates for SV Curvy
The signs of heat distress aren't too good, but I've seen worse than that work fine.
What were the symptoms of failure? |
Re: Steel plates for SV Curvy
Hi yorkie_chris The bike has had difficulty with first, second and getting neutral. Basically they would clunk into gear and not be smooth with the change. Occasionally the bike would drop down to a lower gear when riding.
Thanks for the help :D |
Re: Steel plates for SV Curvy
Plently of movement in the left rearset?
Somtimes they clog up with muck, and seize up, making it hard to change up especially, but has trouble with changing in most directions... |
Re: Steel plates for SV Curvy
Is your chain tension ok too?
This can affect the first few gear changes until you get up to speed. |
Re: Steel plates for SV Curvy
Put them on a flat surface and see if they are warped.
