New member - Cafe Racer (ish) project.

Hi guys,
After 10 years away form road bikes I decided to embark on a Café Racer (ish) project. …Oh no!!! Not another one I here you cry….yes…sorry. In my defence I was toying with the idea many years ago, before it became all the rage. In short I bought the bike in 2015 as a full-faired version (top and bottom) in mint condition with about 12K on the clock. Then over the next 2 winters transformed it. I did it in 2 phases: 1st phase – rear end tidy up and suspension…followed by a track day or two:). 2nd phase (2016 winter) the final rear end overhaul and front end change.

Anyway: I just wanted to thank all of you for all your help! There are too many people to mention and to be honest I have not kept a great record of where I got what idea/advice….sorry! I do however, have quite a good record of what I changed, where I got to parts and some of the templates I made + loads of photos through the build if anyone’s interested?
Thanks again everyone….

Thanks guys...I really wasn't expecting feedback that fast!

Nice. I have to ask, where have you hidden the miles of spare wire around the headlight? I have taken the fairing off my curvy and I have wire everywhere.

Re: New member - Cafe Racer (ish) project.

Ah yes, good question, the dreaded wiring loom.
The simple answer is it's all carefully wrapped round and below the airbox in a kidney shape. Each side is doubled back and is secured to avoid the carb throttle linkages. The other trick was a Ebay bought front end wiring harness (no original parts were harmed in this build - most bits and pieces were from Ebay) which I modified to remove redundant cabling and then added to, creating a better fit. Finally after a quick trip to a local auto factors the main large black clock plug was removed and new (required) cables soldered on to lengthen the loom (using the same colours to avoid a mix up when connecting the clock/dash display).
If you want me to post anything specific about the build just ask, I'll upload any pics if I have or take new ones if needed.

Yep, worthwhile mods, not too OTT as to try to make the bike something it isn't and looks coool!

Re: New member - Cafe Racer (ish) project.

That looks very tidy, nicely executed.

I'm drawn to the radiator; is that standard and stripped of paint, or something else?

Re: New member - Cafe Racer (ish) project.

It's not the standard one, it's another ebay special (£45 delivered). The reason i didn't keep the standard one is that on the faired SV (MKI anyway) the fairing grommet mounts are welded to the sides and I wanted clean lines. I didn't want to hack them off as I'm keeping all the original parts...so a new one was needed. It very nearly fitted as well!!! but unfortunately the bottom mount was off so I made and adaptor plate. You really can tell unless you go looking. The cover frame was a made at work, the honeycomb mesh was supplied again...you've guessed it..by ebay! Oh and I moved the horn...looks better out of the way and can only help with cooling...not that it's ever been a problem.

Very tidy-looking machine! What exhaust is it? Neat job getting the angle of the can to match the tail.

I tried one of those ebay jobs on my build an encountered the same issue, i sent mine back though, had a mare with the sellet too. I went for one of the Delkevik units in the end.

Thanks. The exhaust is made by Scorpion - the high level oval 400mm version with removable baffle . It comes highly polished (with sticker) but as I wanted the brushed finish the sticker had to come off. The springs on the link pipe were added as I liked the look. Getting the seat and exhaust to align was a bit of a pain. I added rose joints to the subframe to lift the back end a little. To be fair the standard set up is not too far off. Hopefully if i've done this right there should be the details of the exhaust below...

Sorry guys...replied to the wrong person...doohhhh!!
I agree the Delkevic is a far better rad...the rad was the last item to get replaced and funds were running low.

Great looking job.Dunno if it bothers you but,"They" are very keen on the North bank of the Humber on none standard number plates

What are they like around your way?

Re: New member - Cafe Racer (ish) project.

I've not had any bother so far, touch wood.
But if I get pulled up for it, so be it, the larger one will go back on.

Re: New member - Cafe Racer (ish) project.

It started here after they got the ANPR in the cars and there's even a couple of special cameras here in Hull with ANPR.

I can't argue with it as I don't want uninsured T*ats on the road etc but I can't see the harm in a custom plate so long as their gear can read it :salut:

Thanks for the info on the rad.

I also like what you've done routing the rear brake line along the torque arm, keeps it very clean, a nice touch.

Top job, nothing flashy just a very nice clean minimalist look, personally I like nekked bikes as it is nice to see the engine - shame to hide all that lovely engineering behind plastic.

Holy poop! I have been following your build and it's an amazing looking bike but that's a lot of money!

Re: New member - Cafe Racer (ish) project.

They are Koso Stinger LED indicators purchased from. http://www.digital-speedos.co.uk/. I spent a long time in choosing them, some LED blinkers look good but aren't bright enough (for me anyway). The originals are a bit big but lets face it they let others see your intention. I have to say these are really bright! I'm super impressed with them. I bit costly but not ridiculous given their purpose.

It's been a learning curve, wouldnt cost anywhere near that id i did it again, i made the mistake of not buying a complete bike to start with.

Thanks. And thank you for the clocks idea. The speedo in the headlight (the exact speedo to be precise) was unashamedly robbed from your build, which is very nice build by the way!

No problem....your not hijacking the thread! It's all good interesting stuff! I see this as all part and parcel of talking bikes. Reading these pages and everyone's comments (before I became a member) helped me produce the bike (which is why are started the thread, as a thanks to all how unknowingly gave me the ideas / inspiration)....without random conversations and threads that expanded many of the mods I did may not have been done. So thanks again and carry on guys!:smt023

Thank you. I had a few doubts through the process, especially after phase 1 when the back end was tidied up and the front was still fully faired....it looked really nice (for a curvy..I hear you say;)) But I glad I stuck to my original plan.

How easy were the koso indicators to wire in, do you have to install relays to correct the flash?

Very!:) All you need is a new 7 pin LED compatible relay and indicator extension leads, if you don't want to cut the wires as the Koso indicators come with bullet connectors. Also note the Koso indicators are fitted via a M8 threaded shaft so if your replacing your standard ones in the original housing you may need to add or make an adaptor to allow fitment. The ones I bought are:

Yes, I noticed they had gone some time ago but just haven't got around to fixing it. I think Photobucket stopped hosting for free?? I will get round to re listing them soon, but in the meantime if you click on my member name, then albums...they are all in there, plus some others. You should be able to see them. Let me know if you can't.
