It's an old Garrard from the 80s Johnny. It's served me well but is starting to squeak a little and speed variations start to kick in after a side or 2 of vinyl. I've put it up on ebay as spares or repair and it seems to have quite a bit of interest. 323655393508
Much to the annoyance of the wife, I've got quite a bit of vinyl but don't want want to get rid of it, mainly because the records are as much memories as old photos. I don't play the records all the time but have bought some recent new stuff on vinyl, sound is good and it's almost worth it to watch the faces of my son's mates when they come round as they haven't a clue what a turntable is. Currently researching offerings from Audio Technica, Sony and Rega.

Here's one for you guys to ponder. I was looking over my K1000 this morning with a view to possibly selling it and discovered a mirror problem. It's definitely the mirror and not the shutter. Problem is that it rises really slowly. I thought the mechanism might be clogged with grease so dripped in a little lighter fluid but to no effect. I tried again and the mechanism fires properly when the camera is upside down. I held the mirror at the top, on the bumper, and the mechanism seems fine. It looks like there's a piece of cloth at the back of the mirror, covering the hinge and I'm wondering if this is interfering with the upward swing somehow. Any ideas?

Not sure but the canon A1 has a damper on the mirror to stop it bouncing. It's that that causes the famous cough. I assume all SLR's have something similar. On the canon it's on the outside of the mirror box.

Yep, it's very similar to that video. Thanks for finding it. It's not the mirror bumper foam because I already replaced that. If i hold the mirror up with my finger, the lever on the left in the video moves up and down as normal. The bit of fabric at the back feels a little stiff and isn't very flexible . Reckon I could oil it? Would removing it cause an issue? Replacing it might require some serious disassembly.

hey! i know how to fix this. do you see the small black cloth behind the mirror? it shouldn't be BEHIND IT, but OVER the mirror. the mirror can quickly get to the top of the prisme, because the cloth gets in the way! so you need to GENTLY pull the edge of the black cloth over the top border of the mirror and that's it! everything will be working fine again.

I did read the comments Johnny but as far as i can see, the cloth is over the mirror, not behind it. I'll look at it again later, check there's nothing jamming the mechanism and see if I can take any pics.
BTW, Johnny, tell me a bit more about your turntable, I've got a week to decide...

I'm not really an aficionado but I'll try! I bought it in about 2003, don't think it was very old then. The mount of the tone arm says Linn Basik LV X, the cartridge is Audio Technica AT95e, MM type I think. It's belt drive, to change from 33 to 45 you refit the belt under the platter, but it tends to slip off on 45, not that I have any anyway. No automatic anything. As you'd expect it gives a CD player a run for its money in terms of sound quality. Brand new OEM cover as a Nest thermostat was dropped on the original; I'm glad it wasn't my money paying for that as it was about £130! So the old smoked one has gone now for a clear one which looks much more modern.

Here are a couple of high res links to the piece of fabric above the mirror. As you can see, it's over the top edge of the mirror but it doesn't feel like soft, flexible material. I'm not sure whether the little flap is blocking the mirror swing at the top left. I might try to snip it out and see of it makes a difference

Re the turntable, I don't know much about Linn either. I had a quick internet search; the Basik seems to be the tone arm. It the turntable a different make? Just out of interest, if you sell it, how much would you want? (although the 45rpm issue might be a problem as I have quite a few 12" singles)
