K4 SV650 Reg/Rec
Morning guys, new here and hopefully you'll all be able to help me with a small issue I have with the above bike.
I'm from Leeds and have a 2004 SV650 that I've had for about 8 years. Obviously like a lot of us, it's not seen much use the last 12 months or so. I've got to get it out soonish though for the MOT and wanted to have a tootle round to give it a run and check it over etc. It's always on a smart charger whenever I'm not using it, and the battery was changed about 4 years ago so I think that will be ok. Starts first time, but on idling the lights are all flickering. The rear LED's worse than the front. I've checked the voltage at the battery and at idle it's very low at 11.9-12v. With the engine off it returns slowly to about 12.7 which you'd expect. When revving the engine slightly it will run at 14.3v which I believe is roughly what it should be all the time, or there and there abouts at idle. I'm fairly certain having a read around that it's the Reg/rec that's knackered? Could anyone point me to a decent source of a new one? I've heard about the GSX600 one? Ideally I'd like a like for like replacement as I don't want to be messing around changing harnesses etc. Pretty sure mine is the later 7 wire one? Once again thanks for any info you can help me with and I look forward to joining the community. |
Re: K4 SV650 Reg/Rec
Welcome. :)
Most reg/rec from similar sized bikes are interchangeable but may require new connectors. Since you don't want that faff, I looked up the 04 SV reg/rec part number which is 3280016G02. https://www.fowlersparts.co.uk/parts/view/3280016G02 It shows that it shares the reg/rec with the DL650 04-07. Suzuki charge £225 ish for this, the ebay equivalents are £50 https://tinyurl.com/xjeozd8c These will be made in China and may/may not be reliable - I've never used one. Electrex make them in UK but appear to be out of stock. I've heard good and bad things about them. https://www.electrexworld.co.uk/cgi-...2ehtml#SID=439 Shindengen are a trusted Japanese manufacturer of reg/recs but you would need to change the connectors or make adaptors for your bike. The FH020AA would be a typical model and are often found on Hondas. £160 ish new. If you type: site: forums.sv650.org reg/rec into your browser it will search this site for related threads - there are many! |
Re: K4 SV650 Reg/Rec
Ok Cheers for that. I did do a search and there was plenty of info on the fault itself, but not much on which ones to go for.
I guess it depends on cost really. Try a cheap ebay special with the knowledge it might end up frying the battery (and other stuff) or spend a bit more for something that's likely to be better quality. I guess I'm lucky in that it's failed in such a way as to not fry the battery, and just not charge at idle. There seems to be a lot of copies of the shindengen ones on ebay too for like £20, I'm guessing they're best avoided? I found another one here.... https://www.motoelectrical.co.uk/pro...30-059-rm30517 Not sure if anyone else has used those before? It seems to be that mosfet ones are the better/safer options? |

Just to throw more options (confusion?) into the mix. All the reg/recs mentioned have been "shunt" types, the Shindengen SH847 is a "series" type which allows the stator to run cooler. They may be harder to find though. |
Re: K4 SV650 Reg/Rec
I wondered also, considering I don't plan on keeping the bike a lot of years (Sorry guys!). It might be worthwhile maybe to order and fit a cheaper one, and have a switched voltage display fitted on the front fairing somewhere either side of the tank. I can keep an eye on charging voltage then continuously....
It probably won't matter even being switched as its almost always on the smart charger when I'm not using it and it'll probably have a negligible drain? |

Re: K4 SV650 Reg/Rec
You can simply unplug the reg/reg and run the bike 'total loss', i.e. just off the battery, to help isolate the problem.
If you see the same problems with lights flickering etc. you may to look again at a battery problem. If it runs perfectly well then you will have proven it's the reg/rec. (Having said that, reg/rec will most likely still need sorting from what you describe.) |
Re: K4 SV650 Reg/Rec
Ok cheers for all the info.
I've been out for a ride today for essentials ;) Had another test and one thing seems strange is that the voltage is low only when it's just ticking over on its own, the slightest bit of throttle and the voltage comes straight up to where I suspect it should be. I've tested the 3 wires to the "alternator/generator" and I'm getting the 70vac at 5000rpm on all three phases so in guessing that's ok. Checking the reg/rec again and it does appear to test ok in terms of diodes etc. I'm starting to wonder if I've got a slightly low idle. Does anyone know what the correct idle speed at warm is, and how reliable is the rev counter to adjust it with? |

There are rev apps on the Google playstore but they vary in accuracy but here's the sound of my "99" at idle , I am revving it as a sound test but you should be able to get an idea, https://app.box.com/file/218563217522? download to your phone. Checkout YouTube as well and you should find some more so you can take an average. |
