caliper seal replacement
Need to replace the seals on the front calipers, can I do this without disconnecting the caliper from the hose ?
What should I be checking for ( hate working on brakes ) |
Re: caliper seal replacement
No, you need to take them off.
Clean the pistons & seal grooves, lubricate with red rubber grease. Lubricate the pad pins & the other sliding pins Plenty of threads on here about servicing brakes |
Re: caliper seal replacement
Check there are no pits or other damage on the pistons.

Re: caliper seal replacement
If you hate working on brakes, do it right. Complete strip, clean, understand what you are doing and do it yearly if you do high mileage or every two if you don't ride in rain/salt. Like maviczap said, lots of good threads on here about brakes. When you have done it once and right, next time it will be quick and you will carefully re-use the same seals.

Very similar if you have the 1000. Very easy job. Fill your boots: http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/index.p...iper-overhaul/ |

Re: caliper seal replacement
well that was interesting ? new piston required as one was damaged during removal... well & truly stuck in the caliper... new one arrived seals fitted piston replaced. rebuilt brakes bled... hopefully...now time to get back on.
hope I can remember how to ride it... seems like ages since I put it away for winter . |
Re: caliper seal replacement
Argh! I should have warned you to pump the pistons out with the lever before taking them off...
I did the same thing myself. |
Re: caliper seal replacement
Tried pumping piston out but it would only move about 1/4 way out. Eventually bit the bullet. Need to bleed brake again though as the lever has too much movement...

Re: caliper seal replacement
Try cable tying the lever hard back to the bar overnight. Sometimes it helps release a bit of air and saves you bleeding again and it costs no time as it's overnight.
