Big feet ...

... you know what they say ... something about needing big boots.

I have pretty wide feet with a high instep. My feet are roughly size 10.5-11, but I tend to wear size 12 to give them a bit more room. Having just started commuting again (:o), I've discovered my ankle boots and trousers don't overlap enough, so I'm in the market for some new boots.

Does anyone have any recommendations for (waterproof) boots which suit the wider foot? Or brands to definitely avoid?

Thanks!

I have two pairs of TCX boots. Both the same size number 10.5, but totally different fits and sizes. The Goretex ones are too big, but that's great as they're the ones I wear two pairs of socks in and have fitted an extra in sole and now they work well. The others (also a 10.5) are not goretex and are more fitted and feel smaller, so suit using as warmer weather boots.

In short, you really need to try them on as even within one brand size and fit varies. Worth trying some slightly oversized ones with extra insoles too though to take up height and still leave width if you have wide feet. I'd take some insoles out of some other shoes you have and take them along to try some on in shops.

Thanks - I will go along (to J&S) to try some on, but it's one of my least favourite activities. Any way of cutting down choice is appreciated.

Thanks, Chris_SVS.

I'm really pleased with both pairs of TCX that I have.

I'd have liked some Goretex Daytona's, but they're too expensive for me to justify. Like most things, any claims to be waterpoof should be taken with a pinch of salt unless you're spending a lot.

I did look in to getting some Altbergs as they come up cheap a lot on eBay brand new. They also do wide sizes. I went as far as buying some and got sent the wrong size, which was enough for me to try on a realise they weren't for me, even if I had got the right size.

Can't recommend any boots but I use GT85 clear chain lube to clean and waterproof my boots/gloves etc.

Stops the stitching rotting as well.If you try some on a glove and then run water on it under a tap you will see the water bead off.

If you want to go expensive,

but as I get a big can of GT85 for £3.00 from Wilkos I'll stick with what I know works for cheap ;-)

I have really wide feet, I once got them measured in Clarks and the assistant openly looked shocked at the result. When asked what shoes would fit she said "none" . Helpful.

Anyhow I wear Alpinestars.

i find Alpinestars are a generous size compared to all others i have tried. certainly Sidi fits much narrower.

There are several shops that specialise in wide fitting shoes. I can just about get away with Clark's wide fit for formal office shoes but find it difficult with anything else. I've been to a place in Kenton (north London) before now and got some casual shoes that were so comfy without there being an inch of empty space in front of my toes I wish I had gone years before. They're worn out now so will be going back soon for more. They have a safety boot section (and a walking boot section) which is not ideal for biking but if you have trouble getting a good fit it may be worth a try.

Thanks all - my ankle boots are Alpinestars (J-6) so I guess that's a pretty good starting point.
