It was part of the memorial of the site. It's one of those Iconic signs, I think it featured in Schindlers List when the train passes into the camp.

the whole place is a memoriam musiem, I visited last year I think it was. I had always heard about it but didnt know much until we visited. It was terrible such a morbid but invaluable education obtained by visiting.

Having visited Buchenwald and been reduced to tears by a display of photographs taken the day the camp was liberated, I hope the sick scum responsible for stealing the sign gets his/her comeuppance.
