Sv650s k4 engine rattle

Hi chaps

Having a minor dilemma here in that my 2004 sv650k4 sounds like it has started rattling from the front cylinder, now the internet has told me it's the cam chain tensioner is either stuck or just being an ****, anyone got any tips or advice that can be beneficial before I start ripping the bike apart?

It sounds like a faint rattle at idle and continues when revved, only covered 13k miles

Any help is greatly appreciated!

My 1999 curvy had 16k miles on it when I got it.It had a bit of a top-end chain rattle. It went as soon as I put fresh Motorcycle oil in(Motul Ma2),

I smoothed my engine more with a little Moly(MoS2) but some people don't want to do this and on such a low mileage engine you shouldn't need it.

I've got some,"Smith and Allen" 10w40 semi synthetic motorcycle oil to try(Read the reviews).

Around £19 inc delivery for 5 liters.

and will be doing an oil change soon as I've clocked over 3,000 miles now and like to do pre-emptive oil changes.

When did it start rattling, and has it been doing it for long? A built-in feature of the SV engine is that mechanical noises come and go at random, with no rhyme or reason.

My own K6 with 20,000 miles will sometimes make almost no mechanical noise at idle. Other times it will make a little camchain rustling and ticking, and at other times it will make quite a pronounced tick. There's no pattern to it, and it never gets better or worse with fresh oil / oil with 3,500 miles up etc. It's just what happens when the engine has twice as many camchains and tensioners as most other bikes on the road.

I agree. They seem to be a very,"Organic" engine<grin> with their own little idiosyncrasies.

If you read this recent thread on the US forum of a High Mileage SV

125,000 miles !!!

http://www.svrider.com/forum/showthread.php?t=378946

it's made me have very little concern about mine now at just over 19,000 miles

Pre-emptive oil/filter and coolant changes are the key IMHO with any motor.
