double glazing

me and mrs kwak was talking the other day about new bedroom windows thats 4 windows in white plastic and as if by magic Mr Safestyle knocked the door yesterday so last night i had there sales guy round to give me a quote, now i didnt know what to expect in the price because the last windows i had fitted was 15years ago, so the quote-

£2000 WTF:shock: thats half a new sv:shaking2:

is this price about right or a compleat rip off? the windows are plain white frames with 1 large opener in each with normal k glass with no lead pattern.

oh and a back door and a set of french doors was another £2700:smt120

Doors are not cheap. Did he shout at you a lot and then offer 50% off?

Re: double glazing

Dr Rich is right, doors are expensive, but £2K for 4 windows sounds a bit pricey, get some quotes from other companies, remember windows are not the same, theres loads of different UPVC systems, and stuff like handles and locks etc etc all adds up as does the glass. Size will be the thing that effects the price as IIRC alot of companies do jump up the price when they go past a certain size window. Also the more opening vents you have the more the price goes up to.

I might be off on my prices as I havent worked in the industry for along time now. But my advice is dont deal with door to door people as I never met one that knew what he was talking about, go into a showroom and sit down and talk to somebody and dont be afraid to haggle.

Re: double glazing

I got my wholw house done about 2 years ago, and the company I got in were by a verbal recommendation.

The Mother in Law works at Jewsons, her friend at work has a friend who has his own company, so I went with them 1. because the quote was good, 2, I fugured that as he was a friend of my Mun in Law's frien he'd not do the SH*T in back yard type thing.

Moral of the story - find out who's had new windows in the last year or so, family friends, work mates, neighbours, and go with a recommendation.

I made the mistake of actually inviting SAFESTYLE to give me a quote, the biggest frigging mistake I have ever made. They phoned me religiously EVERY day, sometimes twice, even when I told them that I'm sleeping off night shifts, they called around to the house 2 or 3 times a week, and one guy even sat in the living room saying "I'm not leaving until you sign up", (I wasn't in at the time - out walking dogs - he tried bully boy tactics with 'er indoors - his mistake - even I don't argue with her !!!!!!!!!!! :smt066:smt066:smt066).

When I got back from walking the dogs, this moron had the cheek to say, "You're wife's just agreed, all you need to do is sign up". After about 2 hours of this clown in my house and would not leave, I took hold of him and "escorted" him to the door. He moaned and complained that I'd just assaulted him, and how would I like to have the Police round, oh by the way if I signed up now, he'd very kindly overlook the "assault".

At this point I showed him my warrant card. Never saw him again.

I wouldn't trust a SAFESTYLE sales person to be able to wipe their own backside.

I've just had double glazing installed all round. Don't know how much it cost as I didn't pay.(don't own the house) But I do know the door alone was £500. I know this because they fitted the wrong one and that is how much the error has cost them.

I thought all that sort of bully boy sales technique stopped along time ago. Kin ell, this is the trouble with the big firms, they are all based on sales and the salesman are just that, they dont know the product or anything about how the windows are made.

Kwak if it were me, I'd find a small local company and go and visit them and as suggested above, get recommendations about their work, ask for a reference customer or previous customers you can talk to ( a good company will have these ).

I used to work for a software company that produced software for window and conservatory companies to tell them what size to cut the plastic and glass. I've seen the inside of a lot of window companies and I always found the smaller local companies to be better, you wouldnt believe the dodgy stuff that goes on in some places though

We got 3 quotes , one from safestyle, one from coldseal and one from a local firm. To do our entire house safestyle £7200, magically dropped to half that when I questioned his figures, coldseal £7000, amazingly dropped to £3500 as long as I spoke to his sales manager ? and the local firm ? £2100 all in and they did a cracking job as well. The tosser from coldseal was nearly crying when we told him we werent interested and kept on saying he would lose his job, then refused to leave, I pointed out he had a choice, door or window, he chose the door.Get at 3 least quotes kwak and make sure you pin em down to exactly what you want mate.Good luck with it

Re: double glazing

Here's the power of unrecommendation.

Our local company Brittania Windows supplied units that had bad wash marks on the inside of the units. Its fairly common apparently, but was especially bad and noticeable as at the back my windows look out onto greenery so there's a lot of contrast.
After a long unresolved dispute I ended up replacing the glass units at my own expense, and these ones were spotless (thats when I should have sued them, after I knew they could be prefect...anyway).

This is going back 12 years or so, maybe more.

My neighbour last year nearly took a deal from them and then cancelled after speaking to me. Brittania Windows rang her to ask why, actually to ask if it was 'because of the people at 83'. Long memories

So there you go. Oh an **** you, Brittania Windows

I was about £800 out of pocket. I only did the ones where the marks showedbecause of the dark hedge background. It ended up about the same as the good firm quoted, and who I should have gone with.
You can get the units from Wickes etc if they are standard sizes.

Re: double glazing

why not ask a local joiner to give you a price.
one guy to measure price order fit etc.
or do what I did.measure them yourself and fit your own .

Re: double glazing

We've got a builder who's mates with my dad, he doesn't reduce the price much but he ALWAYS does a good job. He can source the windows etc and just charges us cost. The last time we used him my mate actually worked for a door/window company so I got 1 custom made to my mum's exact wishes for cheaper that a standard unit off the builder. :-D

It's not what you know but who you know so always go off recommendations. Smaller companies/builders work off word of mouth or recommendations rather that advertising so they try to do a good job everytime.

It's madness that legally you need to install double windows nowadays, apparently triplex if it's a new build!

?

I live in a rented house with single glazing, does this mean they have to upgrade to double glazing??

Noise and thermal comfort for the inhabitants. It's the governments way to make sure you are not getting screwed by the cost-cutting guy who builds the house (who passes the cost on to you, of course) and that you actually have a decent place to live on. Eventually.
