2001 Sv650n top end ticking sound/noise
 

Recently installed an engine i bought off ebay. Bike seems to run fine, might need a carb sync. But nonetheless im getting a ticking sound/noise coming from the top, bike smells like gas sorta. See videos for exact sound

First thing to do if you haven't already is change the oil and filter before running the engine again.

My curvy had a slight ticking on the top-end,not as excessive as yours.I used a bit of Moly in my oil and use Smith&Allen engine oil,

Had a similar problem on my mine did a full service and changed the jets now seems fine oh yeah and checked the timing.

I would do a shim check make sure the gaps are correct especially if you don’t know the mileage ( might never have been done)

I’ve also had it before on gsxr where it tapped like that after the winter so block of wood and hit tensioner and went away.

But if your getting flames through the air box I would look at the timing on the engine and check shims
