part-ex-ing a bike

i may end up part-exing my bike to a dealer, as i have not done this b4 i am after a bit of advice, as to what sort of prices i should be looking at. as i think the dealer will want to make money on the bike im buying, and trading in,

anywho, my bike

1997 honda fireblade

Independent Dealer £2,380
Private Good £1,900
Private Poor £1,510
Part Exchange £1,685

the bike im going to look at

2002 honda fireblade (up for £3999)

Independent Dealer £4,180
Private Good £3,705
Private Poor £3,265
Part Exchange £3,670

EDIT i could buy the bike with cash, then sell mine later

or buy private if i found one

have you secretly won the lottery!?

Dunno - but I'll be watching this thread as I may be on the scout for a bmw dakar from a dealer.

the only dealers I've frequented in the past sold herbs.

I'd be tempted to offer them "boris" + £2K cash ;-)
and to make sure they taxed & tested the 2002 blade (if it needed it).

Also, make sure when you trade it in that it has next-to no petrol in the tank cos you can bet your a$$ that the one you buy will have exactly the same amount of fuel in it!
(tight-fisted f**kers that they are!)

Sad to say, but much of it will depend on how well the dealer has done so far this month/quarter.

If they've done well they may be more generaous, if not expect really hard bargaining.

Also, though winter is a 'bad' time to sell a bike privately, it's often a good time to buy from a dealer - slow business n all that., The flipside being that if you're trading in they you are only going to saddle him with the same amount of stock, so it's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other really.

You'd probably get a better financial deal if you can afford to walk into the shop with cold hard cash and bargain well, keep hold of Boris and sell him on privately in spring.

It was new when I bought my GSX-R but the sticker price was £6949 and I got it for around £6100 (then added alarm and crash bungs and it went back up to £6487 lol). So maybe with a good deal of haggling (and cash) you can get it down to £3500? Would have thought it would depend on how they're doing this month (as mentioned), how much they bought it for, how difficult a bike it is to sell, and whether they've had it for a long time (better to keep bikes coming in/out regularly for a smaller profit than leave them sitting for a long while).

Re: part-ex-ing a bike

£4000 seems like a helluva lot for a nearly six year old bike.Is it exceptional as in one owner full history very low mileage and very clean?
Given that yo already have a blade,is it worth spending all that money for a slightly newer one?

where did you get your valuations from hovis? a dealers book (glass's guide) will always be much less than a parkers valuation, id stick to your gun's and insist on 2k for boris then haggle on the 3999 if they wont budge get extras thrown in, even if you don't want the extras you can ebay them:)

You talking the 954RR Blade Hovis? There are massive updates on that model from your own. It is also a 1'000cc bike that looks "big" compared with the more diminutive later models.

Drop Jelster a PM I am sure he will give you a no frills low down on them. Even better look for his profile as he has a website where he places bike reviews.HTH.
