Does a restricted bike need to be run in?

Now I would've thought this was a stoopid question but a local dealer says no. He reckons that because you're not using more than 33bhp there's no requirement to stick to the running in revs from the manual, just leap on and thrash away!

What do we think about that folks?

I still reckon you need to run it in as normal. Despite being 33bhp restricted the engine will still rev to the redline (I think, but correct me if I'm wrong). The engine will still need all the components to bed in before you can really give it beans.

I could be wrong, and I'm not the most technical bod out there, but that's what gut instinct tells me. (and I've definitely got lots of guts... or at least one big one...)

I ran mine in. There should be less stress on the parts because of the decreased power BUT it is still reving!

Its got to be a pointy (unless you found a brand new curvy :S) so there isnt much point going above 7k revs after that it stops pulling, so no need to thrash it mate!

But as you might have read in the other running in thread you dont necessarily have to stick to the running in process, but its better to be safe and do so.

2 things you must do, get you (is it 1000 mile) first service done for certain, and make sure you use all the rev range, dont just spend the first 1000 miles cruising at 5000 miles.

Other than that take care and enjoy! :o

Yes it will, though IMO rev restrictions are daft, its heat that'll do the damage and letting an engine pull at low revs will create lots of that.

Yes ,bike still needs to be run in.

Defo, amount of revs compared to throttle, giving full throttle from 2krpm will wreck the engine regardless of whether its restricted or not.

Re: Does a restricted bike need to be run in?

IMHO the most important aspect of the running in procedure is to vary the engine speed.

Do that, and personally, I wouldn't care if I strayed a couple of thousand RPM above the recommended limit.

Each to their own, but I wouldn't "thrash" a new bike to within an inch of it's life before it's run in, restricted or not.
