I've just bought a transit to use for work and to cart my dirt bikes around in. I looked at loads of different ones of the same size ie Merc Vito, VW Transporter, Vauxhall Vivaro etc. I spoke to loads of dealers and they all said to leave the Vitos alone as they can develop costly engine probs - throttle potentiometer and fuel injection pump to name but a few. Transporters are excellent but hold their money like you wouldn't believe. Same goes for the Vivaro and its stablemate the Renault Master.

Also, the parts for a Transit are cheap and plentiful. Get a good one and it'll last you years.

Might be worthwhile calling a view bike shops to see what they use or what they recommend.

£4k doesn't sound much though.

I paid £3800 for my X reg with 83300 miles on. They're out there, you've just gotta find 'em.

My lad got a dapping Toyota Hi-Ace for £1100. He has travelled all over France in it, done over 50k miles in a year and it is all good. The body has rusted badly no and will not pass another MOT, but 50K miles for a grand is good going IMO.

Stay away from VW Transporters, they are not all they are cracked up to be. Lots of his mates have them as paddle wagons and they really are not very sturdy.

I have a 2002 LWB Sprinter with 41,000 on the clock, 1 previous owner for sale.

It needs an MOT. but I do not know of anything wrong. Granted I have never driven it. It was the brother in laws and he bought it in 2006. Looking for about £3500. Interested?

I have only one word for you:

TRANSIT

They make Vivaros look rubbish.

The place I work at hire out Citroen Relays. They drive really well & seem to take the abuse that people give them very well. Fuel consumption on a diesel around 33mpg, so not bad for a van. We fit 2 bikes, fuel, generator, clothing, spare wheels etc in quite well, so plenty of space. For 4grand you should be able to pick up quite a good one
