How can they say so many bikes are untaxed and on the road and at the same time say that they pass roadside checks without the police knowing whether they're taxed or not because they have no front number plates?

They're just guessing.

My bike is SORNed and chained up in the shed right now and will be until April - I suppose that makes me a public enemy too. (I can't ride in the winter by the way, injured fingers, cold gives me excruciating pain!)

Have I missed something here :?: I thought vehicles not being used on the public highway do not need to be taxed. :confused:

A whole crock of s*** if you ask me.

I do believe however that of percentages of bike to percentage of cars, that more bikes will be driven illegally because of the less chance of getting caught.

They say that 38% of bikes are evading tax and nearly 40% of bikes are untaxed. They're as good as saying that every bike that isn't taxed is evading tax.

Having read the article, I cannot see where it says that 40% of the bikes on the road are untaxed. It would appear that the figures come from the ratio of taxed to untaxed registered bikes. As Tildo says, his is SORN'd, but is still regarded as an untaxed bike.

This paragraph worried me,

"And, from September, new legislation will allow the police, DVLA and local authorities to take action against unlicensed vehicles even if they are not parked on public roads"

It's pointless saying "Oh, they can't do that" 'cos we all know with the current Gov't that they will pass the legislation. Sounds like they want all vehicles to be either taxed or SORN'd. I suspect it's all part of the crackdown on unregistered vehicles. They are a problem for us with regards criminal activity and power to remove an unregistered vehicle which is not taxed or SORN'd would do one of two things. Either the owner would come forward and be registered as the owner, or the car would be crushed.

Oh, and finally, I am proud to find out that I am "Cocking a Snook" at something. My life is now complete. :D

That bit had me worried though... is 'Cocking a Snook' an offence that places you on the sex offenders register? ;)

And why doesn't the forum checking thingummy jig block the word 'Cocking'. :confused:

I wondered whether the high volume was down to all these mini motorbikes that are all the rage !!

Maybe it's becasue no ones going to insure and tax a bike they've stolen - and the police have done such a poor job at preventing theft that nearly everyone has had one taken.

MCN dismissed this survey a while ago; I can't remember the exact details but the way they sourced their info was very questionable.

After my "off" last year, I was more concerned that the copper attending the scene was aware that my tax-disc was in my rucksack ... but he told me not to worry about it as they could just check it "on the 'puter" and that it would show up if I was taxed or not.

I don't display my tax disc on my bike because "bike thieves have been known to operate around where I live" ... and as my bike is stored outside, I don't want to give them "easy pickings". I've already had a bar-end go missing (just the one bar-end?!).

+1. I thought it was a requirement that a vehicle in use (and at one time registered for road use) must legally either be taxed or SORN'd. Also, the SORN needs renewing every year just like tax does.

Pedro, be careful mate, it depends on the officer that stops you. I had a stern talking to for not displaying mine when I was done for crossing the white line. Also, around my way, traffic wardens can give you a parking ticket if they can't see tax on the vehicle. I'm told that this is because even if you're inside your time, it's illegal to park there without a valid tax disc. I even know someone that contested this because his car tax disc had fallen off the inside of the window into the passenger footwell - he got a ticket, and they refused to retract it.
