New chain help.
 

I think that my chain is shot, as I've just been cleaning it and found a stiff link which refuses to rotate fully. Theres 2 other links which are also less freely moving but do rotate both ways without problem.

Does this mean I need a new Chain/Sprocket set?

If so which one is mostly recommended?

I dont have the tools to fit one so should I just take it to a garage to get it done?

Ive got so many "rainy days" ahead, its like ive been engulfed in a financial monsoon!!:( :(

Chains are easy to do, wedge a lump of wood in rear wheel to stop it turning whilst you slacken off the front sprocket.

I cannot see the point of expensive sprockets and x ring chains etc for an SV.

Tim why do you not see the point with X-ring chains?

Its a bit of a minefield C&S as you have a number of different manufacturers, different chain types, different sprocket materials etc. All I want at the end of the day is a reliable chain which will give me good mileage tied in with economy. I wasnt going to go for the cheapest out there but at the same time wasnt sure if it was WORTH spending top whack for an SV.

What chain will vary on who you talk to like nost things people have their own preference. LAst coupe of chains i fitted have been izumi chains, as for sprockets just get steel ones like tim says. I previuosly fitted a Renthal hard anodised rear sprocket and it was rubbish, the teeth hooked over pretty quickly.
There's not many tools you need to swap the c&s a big sprocket for the front sprocket nut, a paddock or abba stand and some sockets. I don't know about other chains but the izumi comes with a rivet link and a spring clip link, ideal for fitting the chain and then going to a dealer for them to rivet it properly

Rob, t is easy to do. I have done mine few months back. Took me all day (I think twise before attempting to do something). I would be much quicker now. Get an Haynes manual and you are sorted!

Rob, I got from ebay an oem chain and sprocket set from a SV650S K5 had only done apparently 200 miles if that. The chain was cut off, so dont know if you'd be a link short(?)
Yours for nowt, but you have to collect.

How come you ended up with that Ian? Can you get extra links for them?

OEM chain is endless, you'd need to cut one link off to fit a rivet link to the chain anyway, unless you felt like dropping the swing arm out :)

OE chain is DID 525 chain, you should be able to get an extra rivet link. Riveting the link is the only part that can leave you unstuck....

Was cheap on ebay for ?16.00 IIRC. Done 17k on the original oem ones on my K3S and that was without a scott oiler, so thought get another oem set.
Never got around to fitting on my K3S before it was written off.

Chain in excellent condition. I'll take some piccies for you if you want but won't be until the weekend (Sun).

Ian thats not a problem, just let me know. Will have to find out where I could get these links from. Are the sprockets available as well?
