Chuffin' Scams...
 

Have been trying to sell my car on ebay and Autotrader. Got an e-mail from someone the other day:


Hello
How are you today.....my name is kelly mac....i saw you advert on net say for sale..pls i will like to know if you still have it for sale cos i want to but from you.
And i will also like to have this information about the car..
(1)The condition of the car now
(2)The last price you want to sell
(3)And were you are located
Hope to read from yuo soon so i can buy it for my son birthday

I thought...hmm, looks dodgy but I'll give it a go - told him that the condition is how it is described on the web, to make me an offer, and that I am near Plymouth...then got the following e-mail today:

Hello John R Tew

Good day how are you today and your family.i hope all is fine....well i saw your mail and i was happy that the card is not sold....also it is grteat to hear from you.

I will like you to know that i am ok with the price..and we will buy from you,ok now i want you to know that our mode of payment to you we be by bank chaque,also i will like you to give me this payment information, so it will be sent out to you.

(1)Your full name that the cheque will be iuused on

(2)Your full address

(3)Your postal code

(4)And you phone number


I will be waiting to hear from you so the payment can be sent out to you as soon as you give this information to me.

This just smells like a scam to me...just wondered what you all thought. Don't think there is much chance of him getting the info he wants!

If it is a scam (which I reckon it is) - do many other people get this sort of thing when they advertise? Shame I can't think of something to scam them back with - other than providing false details...?

I dont know how this is a scam as yet ...

I think your right it does sound a bit dodge but details of your add and phone number are easily obtainable from other sources ... what am I missing here?

if you send him your adress, what can he then do with it?
if he sends a cheque, wait to see if it clears, if it does (which i doubt) but what have you got to lose

in other words, how can he scam you if you give him your address?

I suppose I'm just being a bit cautious...maybe you are right, got nothing to fear. It's just that if I was buying a car, I'd ask a few specific questions about servicing, general ownership, ask for more pics etc, before I commit to handing a cheque over...

Might reply and see what happens...

Thats what I'm tring to figure Hovis - I mean, if a guy phones me up and wanted to view the car, I wouldn't at all be bothered about giving him my address, so why should this be different?

Na, thats safe. Dont let people's bad english put you off, yo go ahead and give him your details...hell, I think this guy is to be trusted; why not give him your bank details while your at it :lol:

Sounds like a phising scam to me, send me all your details, name, address, bank account no etc and Ill look into it for you ;)

Don't trust cheques even when "cleared". When the cheque later turns out to be junk, the bank takes the money back from you. There is quite a long time scale when the bank can do this, not just a few days. Scammers know how to work this timescale so it "looks" like the cheque is cleared.

How much clearer does a scam have to be????????????

The next step is they offer to send you more than the price of the car and can you please also send back a cheque for the excess. Then you end up paying for the privilege of being scammed.

Thanks for the replies. I have replied to him/her saying that I don't accept cheques, only cash when he/she picks the car up or paypal.

Whats the betting I don't even get a response?:p

I love the bit asking you how your family is.:D
