Wets/ Inters for track use only

Hi, I need something to complement my supercorsa for my track sv, I have found the corsa rather lacking in grip even in damp conditions.

What do you recommend, going for full wets and if so which ones, how much?

Going for a soft but fully treaded supersports tyre, again which one?

I am looking at the minitwins route but right now. I want something so I can still go out on track when its wet but dont want to end up destroying wets running them in too dry conditions.

For the wets anyone know who does them for a reasonable price inside london, prefeabley saturday fitting as well. Mail order is also an option and then just finding a friendly fitter.

I did a test day at Brands back in November last year where it was raining on and off all day but the track never got wet enought for full wets.
I was running Supercorsas (SC2 Rear SC1 Front) and I found that as long as I could keep some heat in them they were pretty good. Also taught me to use the throttle a bit better. Did you use tyre warmers??

He's right you know.

If the track is not damp enough for the tread to actually clear water then in theory there is no need for the tread ata all.

However the tread allowes the carcass to move about more which increases the heat inthe tyre allowing you more grip.

I think what you will find most minitwin riders will do is destroy a set of wets raather than destroy the bike. However if you want to go down the route of 3 sets of tyres you are very limited by choice.

Road tyres are pretty much your only option as anything thats a true inter isnt allowed in minitwins or not suitable in that size for a bike as heavy as a SV as they are 250gp tyres.

Me personally with have a 4th rear wheel this year for those half and half days with a rather knackered wet on it so it doesnt matter if it gets destroyed but affords me the peace of mind that i have a tyre that will stick.

We had a similar thread going only a few weeks ago and came to the conclusion that a set of Dunlop 208 road tyres would be well suited to damp conditions.

I was running normal supercorsa's I think sc1 and 2 are the graded ones right? I did you warmers but they hadnet been on very long at it was freezing, very nearly highsided myself on a slowish corner at snetterton. My problem is that I only have 2 sets of wheels and can only really afford 2 sets, i did carry on with the corsa's and had a few wobbles but nothing major, just I have never crashed before and didn't fancy the first time being a 4th gear highside.

So basically i should try harder with the corsa's and get some wets for full rain?

I only stick the warmers on Danny's ZX10 wets for about 20 minutes before he goes out. It doesn't take much for them to be completely ripped to bits if it's not wet enough out there.

I've seen him out there putting in good times on a patchy damp track with slicks, and he assures me that you just need to keep pushing on a bit to keep the heat in them and they're fine.

When I rode his bike at Mallory it started to rain just as I was 3/4 way round Gerards and I was on slicks, they coped alright as there wasn't enough water to make me slide and the heat was staying in the tyres. Admittedly I crapped myself when it started to spot with rain, and I came in on the next lap then went out again after reassurance from the man himself. Getting your knee down with rain falling gently on your visor is a weird feeling, especially when you know there's no tread on your tyres. It certainly wasn't wet enough to warrant putting the wets on and he went out for the rest of the trackday on the slicks.

Track SuperCorsas are actually surprisingly good in the wet - you just need heat in them (and not get them on the slick part ;)).

Anyway, yep 208GPs are a good idea. Work well wet, dry and in the middle .. if it drys out proper, you will kill wets in as little as 5 laps!! .. but the 208s will lap it up!! ;)

I suggested 208s as that is what I have used in the past and they are a good tyre .. but they are well old now (I switched from Dunlops in about 2001) ... what were they superseded by?? I assume they will be ?better??

I think the Dunlop 'Qualifiers' replaced the 208's.
