removing tank pad and glue

Need to remove an old tank pad, a self adhesive oxford spine type. Thinking best to warm it up with a hairdryer and peel off slowly, but what about removing any residue of the glue and making sure the surface is clean before applying the new one ive bought. presumably a solvent, but what is safe to use on the paint/laquer?

appreciate your advice
steve

thanks for that... would seem ironic to damage paintwork, removing something thats designed to protect it!! lol

whitye spirits might help (depending what type of glue has been used)
it will not damage the paint, but might help to soften the adhesive

warm it up first as said, then you can use petrol to get the sticky stuff off which will also clean the area up nice for the new one to go on.

I used a little bit of petrol on a rag to remove the sticky stuff after I took off all the warning stickers. I also cleaned with water and applied a bit of polish afterwards as well.
