Should i stop riding the SV?
 

Hi guys, actualy got my 2003 k2 in the road for over an hour today and noticed a clicking kinda sound coming from the front cylinder , carried on rideing and it was still doing it after an hour, the bike performance seemed fine, i let it cool down when i got home for 20-30 mins , started it and its gone, ride it again a bit hard to warm her up and 10 mins later the clicking/clanking has come back?

Went down to local suzuki dealer Aye Gees in welling some of you migth know and was told by the mechanic there who also owns a k2 sv that his does it aswell and its no big deal? proberly just the vavle shims at the max adjustment (i felt like asking why does his still make the noise then? after all his mechanic there) he said its fine but to get the vavle clearance checked

They wany 50£ an hour there, plus vat and £ for the gaskets, to check it looking at proberly 70-80, and its proberly needs adjusting and he said no way more than 200£

Hmm , my bikes at 20k and i have no evidance of it being done before, he said it was fine to ride around for now , but wanted ur op?

Do the shims.

Hmm. No need to replace gaskets for a clearance check so that's a wee bit suss... Checking clearances isn't too hard yourself, if you're at least reasonably skilled, changing shims is a lot more involved though. But I predict that it's not the clearances at all, I reckon it's the cam chains rattling.

thats wat i was thinking? cam chain, i read the site before purchasing and this only was a problem on early bikes? if its the cam chain is it bad? do they all do it (as the mechanic said) ? or am i ****ed?

They all do it a bit, all the curvy SVs have the same setup. It's usually nothing to worry about, bikes make noise, but it's really hard to say if it's a problem or not without hearing it. I always think of it as rattle/tick being OK unless it's really loud, but slap is a problem- mine had a tensioner totally fail and it went rapidly from chk chk chk to whack whack whack as it were.

well the suzuki dealer mechainc said his does it and so do most of them? and its been like this all day and seems fine, but if it gets any louder im done for

btw its a 2003? i though it was only early models that sufferd from this?

btw its a very sligth tick tick tick, if most ppl woudn't notice , only reason i did as it doesn't make it from cold

btw can any 1 recommend any good places for a job like the shim adjustment because at 20 it proberly needs adjusting tbh so i am not even gonna bother looking in there myself

? im in SE london/kent area, don't mind traveling a bit for a cheap honest place, doesn't have to be a massive place even a good mechanic that does private wotks ok

Valve clearances normally close up due to the valve seats wearing and valves moving into head. Therefore they do not rattle, just loose performance and worse case burn out. Agree with Northwind more likely to be cam chain.
