Putting a Race bike on the road (legally)
I'm planning on putting my TZR race bike back on the road. I want to keep it manly as a track bike but I need to get out on it and get used to the handling, powerband and lack of engine braking.
When my 33bhp restriction runs out in september I'll be able to take it out, but it doesn't have a speedo or any lights just now. What is the bare minimum needed to make it road legal? |

Re: Putting a Race bike on the road (legally)
As long as it's got a working rear brake light and horn, then it qualifies for a "daytime MOT". If you get a tug the cops might give you some crap about no indicators or headlights, but it's legit. Just don't get caught out at night, the coppers will make you park the bike up until daylight comes..
A mate of mine uses a ducati 999 with full race trim on the road with only a brake light and horn, and twin terminogi cans. It sounds brilliant.:D:D |
Re: Putting a Race bike on the road (legally)
Daytime mot means NO LIGHTS.
if you have a brakelight, you must have working headlight and indicators. You actually get a full MOT (can only get a proper daytime MOT if the bike was made before 1992 i think) but with an advisory 'no lights'. So take ALL the lights off your bike. |

Yeah, I remember ianofbhills saying that about his track SV (the big mad alien), he had it MOTd as no lights but then refitted the brake light. Mental, mental law that.

For the daylight mot all you need is a horn and rear reflector.
Other than that, provided nothing is hanging off and your tyres are good, you'll pass. That's what I've done with my track bike and just refitted lights afterwards. |
Re: Putting a Race bike on the road (legally)
The bike was made in 1989 so it will get a daytime MOT then, right?
What about a speedo? Isn't it illegal to not have one? |
Re: Putting a Race bike on the road (legally)
For MOT, you don't need one. For road you do.
MOT rules are different to the ones the police use, so just because it has an MOT, doesn't mean its road legal. ;) You need: Brakes Horn Speedo |
Re: Putting a Race bike on the road (legally)
Ok so I can't have the brake light on when I do the mot but what would the police say about having the bike on the road without one?
I think it sounds a bit dangerous tbh. |

That's what hand signals are for surely ;)
