Advice on SV650 Sport Request - Extras

Morning... ok Afternoon chaps/chapettes,

I thought i'd plonk up a "Hello" thread as with any luck i'll shortly be a member of the SV club!

I'm doing my Direct Access this week, test on Friday. All being well i'll be pestering some lovely dealers at the weekend and ordering a new SV650 Sport. Bike's for fun, no commuting though!

After chatting to one of the sales type personages in one Suzuki place yesterday I was thinking it makes sense to get a rear hugger. Then I thought, "oh look a magpie... I wonder what other accessories I should get".

Does anybody have suggestions or what I'd be sensible to get the dealer to fit, alarm/immob for example? I forgot to ask what security they come with as standard, is it bugger all?

I'm going to get crash bungs for sure, but not sure what else to try and get into the bargain.
Anyway I have to pop out in the car that everyone at work seems to think i'll be selling now i'm getting a bike - but I won't!

Many thanks for any advice,

Matt

Hugger - hmmm yes... depends how often your gonna clean the bike though! You'll need a fender extender for the front mudguard, some SV's achilles heel...

Security - Comes with bugger all and to be honest a big chain and padlock will be far more effective than an alram or immboliser (I just removed the immobiliser from my 650, actually took me 8mins to be able to start the bike and i wasn't rushing!).

most people find alarms a bit of a pain, generally drain the battery and people don't actually care when they go off, check what discount your insurance will give for it too, often it doesn't outweigh the cost. you'd do better spending your mooney on an almax chain and a ground anchor IMO

if you intend to do lots of miles then a scottoiler might be worth installing, but tbh i have bikes with and without and maintaining a chain is fairly simple unless you're racking up hundreds of miles a week.

what sort of deal are you getting on the new one? i bought mine new because the first year's insurance was free and they had 0% finance on. you WILL lose a lot on a new bike in the first year, i made the mistake of thinking the bike was exactly what i wanted, i was wrong, now mine is for sale in the for sale forum and i'm set to lose a fair amount. unless there's a helluva offer on you may well be better going for a used bike, you will wear the shine off a new one in a few hundred miles and it's fairly gutting to see how much value you lose. There's a few for sale at the moment of varying ages and it's a buyer's market

oh, and welcome to the forum:cool:

I think Suzuki are doing a £400 cash back at the moment.
Yep fit the crash bungs as the first option.

i bought mine new in december 2006, and it came with alphadot security, though i don't know if that was from the dealer or the manufacturer. It's not an alarm or anything, it just potentially helps track down any thieving git when they try to sell it on or break it

i got it new for the free insurance too, to get on the ladder, then had a slow but expensive spill in that first year because of a very silly pedestrian when i was filtering up to the lights, who apparently couldn't be bothered to walk 2 car lengths up to the crossing. "sorry mate, didn't see you"

Oh, yeah... forgot about that. Unfortunately there is no insurance discount with this and its only ever of help when the old bill go rummaging through breakers looking for stolen bike parts, its not gonna get you whole bike back though!

i only hope that little glistening sticker puts people off...

wishful thinking i know!!

truth is, as the others have said, big heavy lock. when i go into town i chain the back wheel up and disc lock the front.

i once had a ZZR smashed up for no good reason by drunks outside a friends house in AU. Don't know why I mention that, I guess it still just grates. There's no understanding some people

Crikey thanks for all the advice! I hadn't really considered the front extender, will add that to the list. I think Crash Bungs then are the priority.
As you say, i'll have to check the insurance different for with and without alarm/immob.

I saw your bike Wolfy, looks pretty damn tasty, downloaded the high res images too, and it is rather tempting, warranty and all that too.

The Dealer is saying he'll do it for 4,100 after cashback (so 4,500 without), which seems to be only 100 off list, or 200 I forget. I don't know whether I can get 'em to go lower, they're not doing 0% anymore either which is a bugger. And I wish they were doing the insurance deal! It's 700 ish for me fully comp! (So far, online, goCompare and a couple others)

Decisions, eh! Wolfy you may hear from me if I can get my brother to let me stay at his in Brighton for a while, not so much of a trip then.

I would say 'the lone wolf' has a good deal there, and he has been 100% honest in his post about the bike. You might be able to haggle the dog into the price too!
