buying a sv650 sport - is it restricted ?
Hi,
I've had a full license for 18 years and am just about to pick up a 2004 (K4) SV650 Sport on a 54 plate. I'm picking the bike up thursday and am keen to get on the road, my concern though is i have no idea if its restricted. There seems to be a restricted ECU suzuki fit on the bike. What i need help with is, how do i tell if it's restricted ??? surely the ECU (next to battery i believe) must have some markings on or a particular serial number identification. I'm popping into the dealer tomorrow (suzuki main dealer), so hopefully they will know or be able to check, but i was just hoping someone may be able to tell me so i am sur ethis is de-restricted. Many thanks. Mike |
Re: buying a sv650 sport - is it restricted ???
just had a quick look on the parts list for k4 sport @ http://www.alpha-sports.com/suzuki_p...FQpgMAodNj8QKg but could only find a single serial number for a "Control Unit, FI" under the electrical section - I'mm assuming this is the main ecu unit but couldn't be sure to be honest. Checking with the dealer is most likely to be the best bet :) welcome to the madhouse by the way

Re: buying a sv650 sport - is it restricted ???
Hi Mike,
I believe that there are a couple of ways to tell if your SV is restricted or not, it depends on how it has been restricted. The ECU, which as you say is next to the battery, is the simple way of restricting the bike as it is just simply a case of swapping it over. I believe the non-restricted version of the ECU has a serial number of MGT 060 and the 33bhp restricted version is MGT 061. Have a look on the unit itself, it should be clearly marked. However, it may have been restricted with a kit from FI International. This is a mechanical restriction involving inlet blades and a throttle stop. If your throttle only turns through say quarter of a turn, chances are it has been restricted using a kit from FI. I'm no expert on this as I'm new to the world of SVs myself, this is just info I've picked up on this forum and through having my bike restricted using an FI kit. I'm sure others will be able to confirm or deny what I have said. Hope this helps, John. |

Easiest way is to just take the thing out and see what it'll do, if it's restricted it's fairly obvious. |

Take it for a ride. If it does 100mph with ease its unrestricted ;)

Re: buying a sv650 sport - is it restricted ???
Hi All,
Many thanks for all your replies, I'll ask the dealer today to check and confirm. Great news on the serial number, thats something i can check easily. The throttle does turn quite a bit as i checked it in the showroom so hopefully i should be all ok. Looking forward to being a born again biker on Thursday :D |
Re: buying a sv650 sport - is it restricted ???
you wont regret your choice of bike the sv is a great little bike.

Re: buying a sv650 sport - is it restricted ???
Ride it and use the entire rev's if it feels strangled then it is restricted, however a Suzuki main dealer should not sell you the bike restricted if you have a full licence unless you specified having a 33bhp restriction.
