Blipping the throttle.

Who blips their throttle? And why?

Firstly blipping the throttle means ,IMO, during a down change whilst the clutch is pulled in, quickly revving the engine so that the engine speed more likely matches the higher revs required in a lower gear.

For example, I'm barrelling into a tight corner at 60 in 5th but to pull me around the corner I need to change down a couple of gears, Clutch in, two gears down, blip the throttle and without fuss the change is done. No shimmying or lock up from the rear.

Forget that I should be in the right gear well before the corner. That's not the point here. And that is an extreme example maybe. On twins it is definately a required skill although you can do it the the usual way it requires more concentration and finesse than I possess. It is can be used on IL4's although most modern SS have a slipper clutch as do the big Aprilia twins (or something very similar)

Once you get used to the technique it does smooth out the downchanges and sounds good too with a loud can.

I do it on down changes, helps it slip into gear much easier without the rear locking up at higher revs.

Yep, I do it on all down shifts for the same reasons as you Pete.

Or when filtering through the traffic to let them know you're there ;)

Or my favourite; right by the window of someone on their mobile.

Blipping also helps enormously with slow speed control (ie. when riding at walking pace). You'll find that you can ride really slowly without wobbling. Good slow control is a useful skill to have.

I blip mine now because it makes a very nice song out of it all :) Used to do it on the SV because of the aforementioned locking up.
