Oil leak at final drive sprocket area
At 40,000 my 99 has developed an oil leak from this area. On inspection it seems to be coming from the clutch pushrod. There is a rubber lip in the bearing through which the rod passes and a housing externally as if for an oil seal about 18.5 mm by 4mm. I assume there has never been a seal there as it could hardly disappear without trace.
My FLD said, yes, there should be a seal there and ordered one up. This is about 35mm dia and so ain't gonna fit. Could be for a later model? Can anyone shed any light on this leak/seal before I go back to FLD next week? |

Re: Oil leak at final drive sprocket area
Didn't someone have a similar problem which turned out to be a dislodged breather dripping down to that area?
Or could it be the clutch push rod seal shown on page 2.31 of the curvey Haynes, picture 18.18c ? |

System won't allow me to attach photo for further advice eg why has it taken this long for a leak to occur when it looks like there has never been a seal there - as a seal could not vanish from this location when the pushrod had not been disturbed. |
Re: Oil leak at final drive sprocket area
The part number is for a '99 SV650.

Yes, I appreciate that you had gone to the trouble of ensuring that, my comment was meant to suggest that my dealer had used the wrong part number, possibly for a later model if the design has changed. Cheers. |
Re: Oil leak at final drive sprocket area
You said 35mm seal, correct the size is (6X34X5.5), same on all SV650 all years.
There is a retainer plate over the area to stop the seal popping out. http://alpha-sports.com/spst/2000%20....htm?clicks=67 look at part 38, to take this off the front sprocket needs to be removed first, so inturn, you need to move the rear wheel so you can wangle the chain off the front sprocket. |
