New Minitwins Paintjob

Hi all, after my little off at Silverstone last month I managed to find a set of GSXR 600 K5 race fairings dirt cheap and decided to try and fit them to the SV. And then do my own paitjob. Considering it was my first attempt it turned out quite well. Just involved a lot of cutting out holes and re fiberglassing.

Cheers.

Very good.

For those of use who have wanted to do this for a while, what did you use (as much detail as possible relating to both the painting and the glassing please)?

It was fairly easy to be honest mate. I take it there wasnt any sarcasm in that? :D

All you need is;

1.) Dremmel
2.) Sand Paper 80 grit
3.) Fiber Glass repair kit
4.) Bodywork Filler
5.) Halfords Primer/Paint
6.) Aluminium
7.) Drill

The main problem with the 600 K5 fairing is that it is too compressed to fit around the SV. So I had to extend the lower fairing by about 2 inches upwards. Then filler over it to get a smoothish finish.

You also need to cut a lot of the belly pan out and create bulges for things like the downpipes and rear shock linkage. Same again just cut out the shapes and bulge over with Fiber Glass and filler for a smooth finish.

You also need to make a few custom brackets using ally. Its a lot easire to do on a race bike, a road bike you would have so many more things to consider like sidestands, modifying original brackets etc.

I also had to heavily modify the rear subframe. By cutting about 5 inches off the back of it.

I could have done it in about 2 days if I had nothing else to do and didnt get frustrated when things didnt quite go right.

The painting was the easy part to be honest. I had a few little runs along the way but because its for racing it doesnt have to be 100% IMO. If i was doing it for the road i'd have it sent off to be pro sprayed. Could be an interesting little project though. A few small projector (lemans style) headlights, home made numberplate bracket etc.

Oh and cheers for all the comments :D

Hers is the rought bits I had to change. Oh and the top fairing is pretty much a perfect fit. Its the lower half that causes the problems.

All the bits in red are alterations by adding fiberglass and custom brackets.

This one shows the bulges I had to fabricate to all the downpipes enough clearance and for the exhaust to exit properly. You might also notice ive had to drill into the frame and tap a thread. I didnt quite get this side right where the two halves meet. As you can see they dont quite sit together properly.

No sarcasm, genuinely interested.

I take it that its a rattle can job for the paint? How long did it take to do and what amount of space did you need for it?
