Meant to ask this before:

Well is it good form or not to laugh when someone makes the mistake between the petrol and the diesel pumps on an org rideout :?:

Er silly question time, what is the actual difference between all of the types of fuel you get at a petrol station and why can't you put any fuel in your engine?

When I fill my SV up which fuel should I use, normal unleaded or the more expensive one?

So long as it's petrol, you won't notice the difference between normal/premium unleaded.

Diesel is lower octane (a hydrocarbon similar to parafin - the octane is the stuff that burns) than unleaded petrol is, which leads to less fuel vaporisation in the cylinder. The effects from here depend how much you put in the tank, and how much unleaded you still have in there (since they're mixed in the fuel tank).

The effects of diesel in a petrol engine range from nothing, through to failure of critical parts (pistons, crank, rods, head etc etc).

Some modern engines have sensors that will try to accomodate for numpty owners, but the SV doesn't have one of those engines.

It's all a conspiracy. An engine will run on cheese, or love if you try :smt039
