eBay
recently been thinking about going on eBay, i usually ask my dad to get me stuff then i pay him, pain in the ar$e really but i haven't bought anything off eBay for about a year, but want some things for the bike lately so on eBay a fare bit
questions i have are: 1. how safe is paypal and how safe is it having it transfer monies between you main account? 2. how does paypal work? will probably think of some more later tar |
Re: eBay
Paypal works as a middleman between the seller and buyer. Paylpal pays the seller, and then paypal takes money from the buyers chosen fund, such as a current account or credit card.
It costs you money to transfer funds OUT of a paypal account (if you are a seller for instance) but its free for you to buy things with it. I have had my paypal account hacked and my credit card charged. This was due to me having a crap password I think, but it was never confirmed. I did get it back but its a pain in the **** jumping through the hoops. I WILL NOT give paypal my current account details under any circumstances. If my card gets cloned or my account is hacked I have time to sort it out before I need to pay the credit card bill. This is not the case if money disappears from my current account. |
Re: eBay
Paypal works like an online bank account sort of. You can pay people using funds transfered from your bank account or you can pay with a debit/credit card which effectively transfers money from from your card into paypal then from paypal to the receiver of the funds. I mostly use it as an abilty to instantly pay sellers from my card. Its easy and fast.
More importantly ebay now own paypal (or some vested interest) so it is pretty seemless between the two. I haven't had any safety issues. Use the same security practices in the real world as you so online. |
Re: eBay
so its relativity safe to have it linked to my main account as long as i don't give out my details (not that i would)

Re: eBay
Just to add a few things if you're selling also, it doesn't cost to get your money out of paypal to your bank account as long as it's more than £50 or so. Sometimes it's nice to just leave it in there then next time you get something on ebay you've already saved up for it, if you know what I mean. If you're a seller, paypal will take approx 4% commision on everything you receive (in addition to your ebay fees).
The protection is pretty good, my friend just bought an imitation iPod (advertised genuine) and he was refunded in a couple of days of opening the paypal dispute. The only problem is they only refund what you pay so he lost out on the postage to return the fake ipod (they refunded as soon as he provided a tracking number so technically he could have returned some doggy doodoo I guess?). |
