Two Go Mad in Somerset, Devon & Cornwall
Spiderman (Zig) and I pootled off around the South West last week.
This is what we did: Day 1 (Monday): London to Porlock (Somerset) Started off with a traditional hearty English lunch. Okay, it was McDonalds on the Target roundabout in West London - but we hadn't set off from our meeting point on the North Circular until about 1:30pm. We're not morning people. And we weren't in a hurry. We were on holiday . Day 2 (Tuesday): Porlock (Somerset) to St Ives (Cornwall) We'd arrived in Somerset on Monday night in the rain, found a great B&B, and woke up to some lovely sunshine on Tuesday morning. http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0533.jpg If you look carefully, you can see a robin (being shy and hiding its red boob) perching on the grab rail of my bike. Cute birdy. http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0529.jpg It flew away; but not before pooping on my bike. Bad birdy. http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0532.jpg Watch out ladies - Spiderman's about! http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0531.jpg After going up the legendary 1:4 Porlock Hill (and back down again, of course) - we took the scenic road from Porlock heading west along the coast towards Lynmouth and into Devon. http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0534.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0535.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0537.jpg How thoughtful of the local council to provide a bus shelter, of house-like proportions, on the top of Exmoor. Ideal for popping into to put on waterproofs (though by the time you've done it, the sun's out again). http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0538.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0537.jpg Day 3 (Wednesday): St Ives - Land's End - Lanlivery (nr St Austell) We'd rolled up to a rather grand hotel on Tuesday night. This is what we saw on Wednesday morning... the grounds of our hotel: http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0546.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0547.jpg Amazingly, they let some biker scum stay there. Zig loads up his mighty steed: http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0548.jpg Heading along the northern coast of Cornwall from St Ives to Land's End: http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0549.jpg Who is this scary man who's following me everywhere? http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0551.jpg Note to self: when parking to take a pretty picture, make sure that you can get your fully-loaded bike off the sidestand without Zig having to get off his bike to give you a push upright. http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0552.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0553.jpg It's the end of the land! http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0554.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0555.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0556.jpg Heading back eastwards along the south coast of Cornwall: http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0559.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0561.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0562.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0563.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0564.jpg Who needs a tripod for a self-timer shot when you've got a very steep bit of road? http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0567.jpg The weather turned as we headed up over Dartmoor: http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0568.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0569.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0570.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0571.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0572.jpg Day 4 (Thursday): Lanlivery (nr St Austell) to somewhere in mid-Devon Erm, it rained, we rode for hours. I don't think I took any photos! Oh yes, this one - especially for Mr Toad... following his recent advice, we asked if we could stay overnight here - but they said no. http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0573.jpg Day 5 (Friday): somewhere in mid-Devon to London It rained. A lot. The River Exe was verrry swollen: http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0576.jpg After some muddy, mossy, slippy, slidey back roads, we headed for home. Frith Street to be precise, just in time to catch the end of the weekly Soho Massive meet. http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...8/IMG_0579.jpg Okay, so we're no Ewan & Charlie. But we had FUN! |

Re: Two Go Mad in Somerset, Devon & Cornwall
Looks like a nice trip. Proper gorge. That hotel looked very swanky.
Can't wait to get my rock. :) |
Re: Two Go Mad in Somerset, Devon & Cornwall
Looks like an awesome trip. Would love to do this sometime. Did you drop down into Sennen Cove just before you got to Lands End? Its really hidden away but if you do you find a stunning harbour, a 3 mile white sandy beach, a 4 wave break and occasionally dolphins playing in them. I found Lands End was a bit of a let down but head 3 miles back into Sennen Cove and I was in paradise.

Thats a cracking road from Porlock to Lynmouth isnt it?
I did have a close encounter with a sheep near the county boundary but the less said the better eh? |

Spidey & Cazza you should have let me know you were coming our way I'd have come along the A39 for a bimble with you. |
Re: Two Go Mad in Somerset, Devon & Cornwall
Funnily enough Fizz there was one evening when we were having a tough time finding a half decent B&B that i suggested we call you and say were coming over, lol.
TBH tho mate we went with no idea and no plan and just made it all up as we went. I know Cazz's little write up doesnt sound that way, it seems as tho we had a plan and everything but trust me, we didn't  |
