Re-waterproofing textiles
I had to wash my Belstaff textile(cordura) jacket after it got just too manky. I followed all the instructions to the letter, and used Nikwax wash in reproofer(recommended by Hein Gericke) - but it's rubbish now and instead of water beading and running off, it just seems to soak in.
Is there a spray on version? Or something better? It's only a year old so don't really want to have to bin it. |
Re: Re-waterproofing textiles
Theres a spray on version of the same product. The wash in stuff normally works pretty well.
Did you wash it with the Nixwax techwash first and then wash it a 2nd time with the wash in re-proofer, You need to do it that way otherwise you're just trying to reproof a dirty jacket and that isnt going to work IIRC. Also once you've reproofed it, you need to hang it up somewhere warm, like an airing cupboard as the heat activates the water repellancy in the reproofer... If you go down the spray on reproofer route you'll need to wash it again and then let it drip dry for a bit before you apply it, if you apply it when the jackets soaking wet the reproofer will run straight off again. |
Re: Re-waterproofing textiles
Ok, I've missed the washing step. I did ask what I needed and they just gave me the one bottle. Thanks for the advice.

Re: Re-waterproofing textiles
You may have already done it now but i just reproofed my walking jacket & was advised by the shop NOT to let it hang up whilst wet as the wash in proofer will run down to the bottom, logical really, i was told to tumble dry if clothing allowed if not to iron it partially dry before hanging it up, worked a treat.

Re: Re-waterproofing textiles
The best I have used other than Nikwax is Grangers 2in1. Proofer and cleaner in one bottle, one wash and if your garment allows, be sure to tumble dry for at least an hour and it works very well.
PM me if you want help, I work in an outdoors shop. |
Re: Re-waterproofing textiles
Go to your local chandlery (sailing store), they will have stuff to waterproof sailing gear, and if that is not top stuff nothing else is :)
