Ideal Track Bike

Been toying with the idea of getting a dedicated track bike for next year.

Currently riding a ZX-7R after selling my SV a few years ago.

I'm not sure what bike to get.

I've seen a few R1s going for reasonable money, but my question is do you really need a big litre bike or would you have more fun on a newish 600, i.e something that you can really thrash as opposed to a powerful litre bike that has more potential to eject you mid corner if you get it a bit wrong.

A gsxr750 is prob best of both worlds but most of the later ones are above my budget.

got about £2500 to spend.

not got too much track time under my belt but want something more powerful than say an old 90s CBR600.

Any advice would be appreciated. I'm prob being too sensible and should just get a R1/GSXR1000 etc.:D

not really my area but there's a guy on here called luke (user: sv_to_gsxr) who bought a gsxr600 track bike for 1300 quid if i remember correctly? Think he got lots of extras such as sprockets and rearsets and a full race fairing already fitted. You can get quite a lot for your money these days since they're a luxury item used purely for track racing...

I'm sure if you drop luke a pm he'd be happy to give you some advice :) if not, tell him he's a miserable tawt for me ;)

You can pick up a fully track preped 600rr for £2k - £3k

Theres plenty of people out there that say its one of the best track bikes you can buy for performance and fun.

is there any reason why you couldn't get a track bike "mot'd" - i.e. just pay the garage to check it over with all the usual checks but not bother with a certificate at the end of it?

with an mot, they check alot of things which you wouldn't use on the track? lights: working and aligned properly? tyres: road legal? indicators flashing amber at the correct intervals? emissions? etc... Then again if you're using it as a track bike you could use it as a learning experience by checking what you could, and then getting a mechanic mate to have a look at the more advanced bits for you?

Sounds like a service with the parts to me.....cant see that being a problem at all.

I'd concur a screaming 600 you need to tapdance on the gearbox to go fast is way more fun than a lazy thou!! ;)

With a budget of £2.5k you should be able to pick up a pretty handy semi-modern 600cc 'package' ...
