iPod help

OK. I have a 1st gen iPod with lots of stuff on it. (~10Gb)

My old hard drive (with iTunes on it) decided not to work anymore.

How do I get the tunes off the iPod and into my new iTunes without losing anything.

I have different tunes in iTunes (~3Gb). When I connect the iPod it shows up but won't let me get the music off it and into my library.

Well, out of the box, yo0u can not transfer from a pod to PC, it will not allow you. But, there is software out there that does allow you to do this and the link above amy be that. Coolgorl had the same issue, and i am sure there wasa link or work around for the same situation you are in.

Edit, have a look in this thread

Throw the iPod in the bin, kiss your music goodbye and go buy a nice non-DRM encumbered MP3 player and consider your lesson learned.

+1.

Sorry, don't wish to appear unhelpful, but this is the answer.

Explain 'non-DRM encumbered'. There are thousands of songs on my iPod. Less than 5 have any form of DRM. There's also software you can download to strip the DRM from those tracks.

There's also software that will transfer music back from the iPod to the PC.

So what exactly is the problem?

By stripping the DRM that makes you a criminal, probably more so than just downloading the tracks would have.

"Theres also software" I just plug my player into my PC, be it running Windows or Linux and lo and behold I can do whatever I want with the files on it.

So there are a couple of problems - add to the mix that as far as I know, iTunes defaults to DRMing ripped CDs (you know the ones you already paid for)

Apple are the masters of the Vendor Lock in - avoidance is the best course of action.
