Front brake calipers seized
 

is it common for the sv 650s 1999 model front calipers to seize on? had probs with mine then tuesday night went to move bike and the sized on and i came off the bike, had it for 2 years and it had replacement calipers when i bought it

Yes, you need to service them regular like! If you've never done it in two years....well I'm not surprised they're seized

Yes servicing the brakes once in a while is usually a good idea

ah right, it's my first bike and have never heard of servicing brakes? other than doing the pads, i have only done about 2k in 2 years though.

They not like car calipers, older bike brakes need a bit of TLC to keep them working, corrosion gets behind the seals and squeezes them onto the pistons which locks them in place. Outdoor storage, winter salt and infrequent use don't help matters.

Thats your answer then hun. They need to be used or the pistons will get stuck. I can guarantee that one of my SVs thats been sat in the shed for three months will be a tad hard to shift because of the brakes seizing a little, and thats after they get serviced and rebuilt regular. I learnt my lesson last year when I used to have to hit the damn things with a rubber mallet to free them up*
Theres rubber seals in there and crap gets stuck in them...a bit more technical than that, but I've had the run down and shown how to do em by YC. Also your brake fluid may need replacing too.

*something which I don't recommend!

2k miles in 2 years I would say whole thing needs at least a look over.

yeah well i learnt my lesson the hard way, wasnt wearing my gear when moving it and now have cuts and bruises and aches!!!

got serviced and mot may will have to do brake fluids and get calipers overhauled then

Ah we've all done it, hurts more when moving properly.
