Driving Licence confusion.

I've started the ungodly sin of learning to drive a tin can cage of a car. Now I'm only at the start of practising for when I get round to booking up my theory test and I'm confused.

My licence currently looks like the one on this page. But under section 9 on my licence it has [b]A,k,p[b] which means I can ride a motorbike, Pedestrian controlled vehicles () and mopeds. So with that in mind do I have a full motorbike licence or do I have a provisional car?

Do I need to re-apply for a new licence and have the entitlement for a car put on it and then book my theory? Anyone else done their theory/car test with a restricted bike licence?

The direct.gov.uk seems to get it's terminology mixed up between riding a bike and driving a bike. Oh the confusion.

dunno about the license, but sit on the naughty step and give yourself a good talking to. Cage license indeed.!!!!

Seriously though, I once attempted to learn to drive, i think it were around 18 months ago...nightmare, couldn't get the jist of it at all, and gave up. All them levers and pedals in the wrong places, and a steering wheel that didin't point and away you went, you had to drive it like a Harley and think 10 miles ahead of the corner...lol ;-)

As for all the categories, I seem to remember seeing them on mine too, and i never had a problem. Full bike license, but some guff thats hazy about provisional car i think. Instructor didn't pick up on owt so it must have been fine

The most apt thing I could find is:

Or you could try apply online.

Thanks for the quote Baph but I think that's on about larger vehicles then cars. I just checked my paper counter part and under the Provisional Entitlement it has A B and F which is bike, car and tractor respectively. So going on the fact the paper one has a car in the entitlements does that mean I don't need to apply for another one after all?

On a side note me and my Dad had a bit of a disagreement. Does my Dad need to insure me on his insurance for me to drive his car on L-plates? Or is there some loop hole in the law that states learners are automatically covered on the supervisors insurance?

Thanks very much for the help. :D

You need to be insured as a provsional driver to drive a car with somone who has a FULL UK car liecense, you can go out with anyone aslong as they have a full liecense and you are insured to drive the vehicle. I did this with my GF when she was learning about a year ago and the supervising person has to be over 21 or 3yrs driving experiance.

You need to be named on your Dads insurance policy if you are going to drive the car.
You are not automatically covered by some kind of miracle :)

Sounds the same as mine hun, I doubt you'll have to apply for another one. Why don't you ask a driving instructor?

I've not got that far yet, currently memorising all the questions to the theory test so when I go to do it I can pass it with ease like I did with my bike theory. :D

Thanks for the replies Stu and Brit, I guessed I was hoping for too much. :p

the theory has changed isnt it now 50 questions and you need to get 40 right or somthing and is supposed to be going upto 100 questions in Oct this year. When i did mine it was only 35 and get 30 right, but i had to do the hazard perception.

just a minor correction - the supervising driver must be at least 21 years old *AND* have a full current licence they have held for at least 3 years:
