Loosening stuck nuts?

I have come to undo the nut on the rear axel and discovered that it appears to get stuck! It was fine 2 weeks ago when I adjusted the chain tension (it came straight off without any hassel), however when I try to loosen it now it will lossen for maybe a couple of turns and then becomes impossible to turn anymore! Any ideas why it could be stuck and how to fix it?

Cheers

Andy

Hope it isn't threaded :S
Can't see any reason why it would get stuck.

Have you stood on the breaker bar to loosen it yet?

Sounds like the threads have "picked-up", in other words at some point the metal threads stuck and got torn so effectively wedging the threads.

This is usually recoverable but don't try to short-cut the process, the danger is that it will just get worse if you force it and end up wrecking the threads completely and you'll end up having to cut it off.

Get some penetrating oil, not just WD40 but proper penetrating oil, maybe something with graphite in it. Soak the threads you can see and leave it to penetrate. Then move the nut a little and add some more. Allow to soak and repeat. Gently work the threads back and forth to get the lube right through the nut. Once you have it fully lubricated the risk of it jamming solid is greatly reduced and you should (hopefully) be able to carefully wind it off past the pick-up.

Good luck.

I had to get a new axle/nut for my gixxer after something similar, threads truely wrecked. see here.

Local breaker had one for £10

Does anyone know how much a new nut and bolt would cost from dealer or somewhere I can order online?

The place where I got it from says they will have a look at it for me on friday for free, so I think I will take it up to them.

Any chance it was over tightened when last done up?

Not exactly (I will explain). I always used a torque wrench to tighten up the nut with the torque wrench set to 100Nm. However I did do one thing that was probably out of the ordinary.....

The last time I adjusted the tension I noticed that the slider/marker on one side of the swingarm was hard to move so I hammered the bolt out a little bit to allow some room. However, when I came to tighten the nut back up I didn't hammer the bolt back through again, so it ment that when I tightened up the nut, it was pulling the bolt through. Im not sure if this could have damaged anything? I dont think it could have though because I used the torque wrench for all of it.
