Updated: I've Taxed My Bike

I've taxed my bike. Nothing special about that you ask, apart from the fact its the wrong one. Let me begin...

I own more than 1 bike and have done for some years. Each time I go to the post office to get road tax I usually have to explain to the often Orange lady behind the counter what a motorcycle is, what SORN is, and what a multi-bike insurance policy is.

This year I thought it would be different as only one bike is insured and MOTed, my current SV. So I get the renewal through the post for my SV and head down to the post office with all my documents. £66 lighter I have a tax disc. I go home and forget all about it.

Until I open another letter from the DVLA today. Its a renewal letter for my SV. I think well thats a waste of time I have already taxed it. But found it a little odd that they have sent 2 and pull out the letter and tax disc from the previous month. Here I discover the problem...

I own 2 SV650's a now dead T reg and my running V reg. The V reg is insured and has a valid MOT. The T reg does not. I took the renewal form for the T reg along with only documents relating to the V reg and got it taxed. The T reg is dead its not insured and its MOT has expired but it now has valid road tax, I'm going out for a ride.

Looks like there's going to be a call to the DVLA tomorrow.

It's strange that they gave you a tax disc without proof of insurance or mot for that bike

And they are probably going to say something along the lines of "you will need to return tax disc for refund (which wont be return of post), minus this months tax, sorn that bike and the accept the fine for not having taxed or SORN'd the other bike on time"

You could have saved yourself any problems by doing it all online as well ;)

I would go to the same post office who made the error and get her to transfer the tax, surely they have a phone number in times of such c0ck ups and she is at fault for not reading your documents properly. I certainly wouldnt accept loss of one months tax.

Exactly what I was thinking, there was an error with the registration on my insurance document and the post office assistant spotted it straight away and wouldn't tax the bike. I hadn't noticed the error at all and quickly got on to the insurance company although I guess it depends how carefully your documents are checked.

I did a similiar thing recently,,,well actually taxed a SORN vehicle on the 31st of the month to be able to drive it the very next day(the 1st of the following month)When I got home I discovered the lady had given me a disc for all of the PRECEEDING month, in effect losing a months road tax.
I phoned up the number on the website and they said OK, understood, write a letter to this address, explain what happened. I did that and they sent me out a replacement disc.Seemd quite straightforward really,,,,,

You want a lift to the DVLA?

I have two bikes.

One is in pieces, not taxed or insured
The other is insured, and taxed and and petrol in the tank.... But will not run..

Sorry, but can't help but chuckle at the way you presented the story. The thing is who was at fault..... They should not have given you the tax disc without valid documentation. Nuf said.

I have 2 bikes, neither has MOT 1 is taxed (and needs to be renewed end of this month) one is SORN.

Well I've just spoken to them and they tell me I need to send the disc back to them with a V14 and a covering letter and they will refund any full months tax. So it sounds as if I might loose a moths tax which I think is unfair. The lady on the phone just said to explain everything in the letter and they will see what they can do.

In the mean time I need to tax the correct bike!

I think I might do this one on line...

fortunately for me, the on line tax would not let me. It kept saying I had no insurance. So off I went to the post office who pointed out that 2 numbers on my insurance certificate were transposed. They knew it was a **** up and let me have a disc anyway.

New insurance certificate arrived 2 days later when I had to change my bike for what I actually had. I would have hated to have been pulled by an ANPR know it all and 6 pointed for a genuine mistake
