Oil change info please.
Hi peeps, i am doing an oil change on my nieces SV650 2000 model and wish to find out a couple of things as she does not have an owners manual.
I have removed the drain plug (allen key) in sump and the 14mm bolt on other side to drain all oil, also removed the allen bolt on top of left hand housing, not 100% sure here My question is how much oil goes back in and where, i am assuming it is back through the cap on the right side casing, i have new filter also but that is straight forward. Hope someone can help quickly as i am in the middle of it:) Cheers in advance peeps iain |

Mines a pointy (2005) but i think the engine bottom end is the same. Only one bolt to remove to drain, back left side of sump by the side stand. Leave bike on side stand so all oil drains out (better done with a warm engine). Whilst that is happening change filter, have a big tray catching the oil because some will drop here when you loosen the filter). When everything has stopped dripping replace drain plug bolt, taking care not to overtighten it. Then fill oil in right side of engine top of clutch cover. Can't remember exactly how much but it's between 3 and 4 litres, check the level in the sight glass below and in front of the filler (don't forget to allow time for the oil to settle and hold the bike upright when doing so. Good luck.

Oh, once you have filled it start the engine for a couple of minutes, then switch off, pause a moment and check the sight glass again. Will probably want a drop more oil as you have now filled up the filter.

Cheers mate, done many oil changes on bikes so pretty familiar with procedure, so what is the plug with the allen head i have removed on the right side below the clutch cover, it has a copper washer, all the oil drained from it:confused:

I'm busy looking that one up because you've got me curious, I suspect it's an inspection/access point to a sensor or similar. By the way it's only 2.4 litres according to the book.

Sure it says on the side of a curvy 2300cc near the oil filler. Plus there is a sight glass on the filler side, just make sure the bike is level when you fill it up :)

Sorry mate, can't find what that is for. Best just put it back as it was!!

Re: Newbie needing a bit of quick help pleeez
On a K6 it will take 2.7 litres with a filter change - 2.3 litres without. Only one drain plug that I could see and for the sake of a quid a new sump washer wouldn't go a miss. ;)

Re: Newbie needing a bit of quick help pleeez
I can't be sure but the allen head bolt gives access to the area in the crankcases immediately below the oil strainer, so I'm guessing it's where any debris in the engine might end up. I wonder was the end of the bolt magnetic? My best guess is that it's there to remove said debris....
